Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage. Traditions connected with the holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras and marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these items as gifts f ..read more

At the end of September, Denver Art Society held a fundraising event with live music and live painting! Artists created a one-of-a-kind piece of work in response to the music and are proud to have raised $300 at the event. We purchased a gift card to one of our Art District on Santa Fe neighbors, ReCreative Denver, and donated it to the La Alma Recreation Center for the staff to get art supplies for the kids at the center. We are immensely grateful for the work that Shauna and the staff at the rec center provide to the community and would like to extend special thanks to our members who organi ..read more

Art Review: Avi benEzra

This work by Avi benEzra @benezra_avi is inspired by the many workers who support our lifestyle. In the wake of the coronavirus, it is impossible for us to repay those grocery workers and healthcare workers who worked endlessly in the beginning of the pandemic and continue to take on the unknown risks to uphold our luxuries and necessities alike. Avi shared with me that this is his first attempt at people in his work with steel. The symbolism in his work is constant and the motivation behind this piece as a way to pay homage to the people who were up frontline during the pandemic is evident ..read more

Elizabeth Crocker: Abstract Artist

I know from Liz Crocker's @ecrocker05 work there’s so much texture in the colours, this particular piece I feel like there’s dancers joining together and whatever piece of music they’re enjoying call’s you in to want to join the party. The array of Colours that Liz has chosen also brings joy and movement; the string and the colors coordinate together to create a symphony. Liz has been painting with acrylics for around 20 years and studied at Tarleton state university in Texas. During the day she works as a registered nurse and loves helping people. When she’s working as an artist her main goa ..read more

Art Review: Shelly Saville

Alli's Enchanted Eye View A figure is surrounded by bursts of color in glass sheet-like branches with darker colors towards the lower portion of the canvas and touching areas of the torso and legs. And circular shapes of darker blue. Shelly's work evokes my emotions in layers that seem to pull one into the painting itself. Each color a shard, each shard a feeling, it leads gently at first towards the next like a dance until we feel more met with the possibility of shared experience for example, the figure holding their head in anguish? Ecstasy? Or passion? The list of possibilities is endless ..read more

Art Review: Jon Ansted: Nature Reclaimed

A cement orb with a tall cactus inside resting on a small block of cement. Nature's Reclaimed envisions the future utopia of renewal and reclamation using mediums of concrete, soil and plant life. Jon @natureclaimed loves plants and concrete, mix the two together and he has created a passion. Living in the city allows me to have endless things to create - fortunately cement is easy to come by, plant life and a keen eye for design and raw materials combine the two together. Using Cacti- is a lovely choice because if I forget to water it will be OK. It is self-sufficient for a few weeks, Jon sa ..read more

First of all, D.A.S. totally rules! I have been coming to D.A.S. for yearrsss because of the art, music, and festivities! I attended many figure drawing sessions (upstairs) and had to be a part of the action on First Fridays. Even though I have been coming to D.A.S. for a while, I have only been hanging art for about 3 months. I decided to become a member when I realized my art was just piling up and collecting dust. I got over the fear of displaying in public and now I'm inspired to keep on creating! D.A.S. rules! - Charles Levesque @caveman_boy #DASartist ..read more
