Tow Vehicle Towing Capacity vs Payload Capacity

Hi All, I have confused myself regarding my F-150 towing capacity vs its payload capacity. Looking for some help/confirmation regarding the following: We have a 2022 International 30FBT. I think its about 10,000 lbs. I tow it with a 2018 F150 with 3.5L ecoboost with Blue Ox hitch and stabilizer bars. It has a towing capacity of 12,000 lbs. So I think I am OK there with the towing capacity slightly higher than the trailer weight. Its the payload that I am not clear on. The F-150 has a 1450 lb payload. The tongue weight of the trailer is 900lbs. So I am correct that its 1450 - 900 = 550lb for ..read more

It shows a fault if I plug in the trailer to the truck bed socket. It will not power it. What is going on? Anyone else figured out how to make it work? It is not like the 7.2KW on the F150. Should be a single circuit. Help. JC ..read more

So here we go. I am picking up my Ford F150 Lightning Lariat tomorrow lunch time. Now, this is being bought as a daily driver for my wife to commute during the week and tow horses around town at the weekend. This will not totally replace our 2013 Ford Expedition EL, but for local camping trips it absolutely could The stats on this truck are well know, but I don't see much on people using it for pulling a 25ft RB Airstream. The model I am picking up: Tow package 1591lbs payload 10k/1k trailer/tongue Extended range battery We plan our first local trip in May. It is a camp ground about 30 mi ..read more

Got a new truck to take over towing our 1975 Argosy 24. We have been working like crazy on our 1969 Dodge D300 flatbed. It's a cab and chassis dually with a 12ft flatbed, 318 2bbl, 4spd with 4.11 gears. It's a bit of a rescue, so I have been going through the entire truck fixing pretty much everything. It's got a 10000lb GVW, and we're getting custom ramps made to haul our '68 Baja bug. I have weighed the truck and have over 4000lbs of capacity. I'm going to weigh everything as it starts coming together. Today I am setting the hitch up for our first tow tomorrow. It's all going to roll to Inte ..read more

Purchased a 2023 Flying Cloud 23’ last spring. The dealership set up the Blue Ox distribution hitch with the tow vehicle, a 2020 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton. Towed wonderfully. Today we traded the 2020 Sierra for a 2024 Sierra 1/2 ton. Same truck, same engine (6.2 liter.) etc. Question…………the hitch on the new truck is 1 1/2” higher. Do you think adjustments will need to be made on the hitch because of the added height ..read more

I'm really happy with our setup after our first weekend camping. Decisions were made all along the path to us getting a trailer based on space constraints and needs. We have parking beside our garage off the alley and 26ft is about perfect for being able to back it in, plus plenty of room for my wife/I. Based on that, and our off-street parking in front not fitting a full-size, I went with a 2019 Colorado crew with 5' bed. I hit a CAT scale last week after all the renovations (axles, 12v fridge, etc etc) and am very happy with the numbers. 5080 truck with wife/I/full gas 4520 trailer no wa ..read more

Vehicle Frame Welding

Modifying and welding vehicle frames seems to be a reoccurring conversation point here. Here is something to consider: https://weldingcentral.com/frame-welding/ For me, I will pass on having a TV with a frame modified or repaired with welds. I have an old pickup that is a keepsake and is becoming increasingly rare. The model also has a well documented weakness around the steering box. Would I have a qualified collision center repair as needed to keep it alive? Yes. Would I still tow and haul the occasional load with it? Maybe. Would it be my primary TV for thousands of miles a year? No. If ..read more

Last week, I picked up the truck. I know there are a lot of disapprovers on here, so feel free to click through to the next thread. For those interested, the driving, maneuverability and tow experience was excellent—albeit only a very short 27 mile towing experience. It was a mix of local roads and highways. Range—I know this is the most important to everyone, but I don’t have enough highway miles yet to truly opine. I will have it out on the road sometime over the next month and will report back my experience at different speeds. On the highway, I can say that the efficiency was significantl ..read more
