The famed expert on “everything proper,” Emily Post, once quipped that “Manners are a sensitive awareness of the needs of others.” For 67 years, our family has been keenly aware of the reason people come to hunt with us: because we take care of your every need. Tradition, rooted in treating our guests like our own family, is combined with ... Read More

I feel certain that by now most of you have read the good news about Riverview’s experience with Hurricane Helene. Just in case you are as technically challenged as I am or off the grid as I tend to be in my retirement years, please allow me to share the good news. In the last few hours before Hurricane ... Fall has always been my favorite season as both hunting and college football seasons begin. At Riverview, one can now hear the sounds of shotguns being fired as dog conditioning and brush up training begin. Rumor has it that SOME of our guides are no better shots than SOME of our guests. We may need some of you to kill ... Read More

College football on the TV. Changing colors in the leafy canopy overhead. The distinct call of the bobwhite quail. These are just a few of the attributes that define fall in Georgia. For decades, Georgia has been dubbed the “quail capital of the world,” and for good reason. The state even declared the bobwhite quail as the official state game ... Read More

As the old butter commercial once exclaimed, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”, but it shouldn’t be fair for the capricious lady to fool us also. The last few days down here in South Georgia have felt like an early hint of fall with much lower temperatures and humidity! Alas, Mother Nature is just toying with us as we ... Read More

As I began writing Summer Scene 2024, it suddenly occurred to me that this will be my 50th edition of our summer newsletter. I wrote the first one in 1974 following a devastating fire that destroyed our original main lodge, office and 80% of our old single room lodging accommodations. I had intended to write only that first newsletter to let our faithful guests know that we planned to be in business by the fall. My opening words were “with chaw in jaw” referring to chewing tobacco. Hopefully, my writing style, as well as my sophistication, have both improved a lot since I was 25 years old at t ..read more

Rumors of my demise are not true even though I’m nearer my expiration date than I once was. The truth of the matter is that I’ve been traveling a lot this spring and summer with my new lady friend, Carol. Due to that fact, y’all probably know as much about what’s happening at Riverview as I do.
However, since Cader IV has threatened to cut my pay (AGAIN) due to dereliction of duty, I thought that I should polish the rust off my brain cells and start writing again. My first step will be to go home and spend some time on the plantation riding around visiting with Cader, and hopefully, cat ..read more

Our 2023-2024 hunting season officially ended with a bang on March 23rd. Once again, the finest guests in the world came through our doors to enjoy world class hunting, woods, dogs, guides, food, and service! I often wonder what people think of as they prepare to enter eternity. I somehow doubt that any of them would say that they wish they had spent more time in the office or working on that big project.
I just have to believe those folks would wish that they had spent more time with their families and enjoying God’s creation in the woods behind a pair of well-trained dogs or on the ri ..read more

This is not my normal blog, but it’s a subject that is very much on my heart. I buried a friend yesterday. Thomas (Tommy) Gaines funeral service was yesterday in a beautiful church that he was instrumental in getting built. I grew up with the Gaines and Williams families. For many years, those two families formed the nucleus of Riverview’s most valuable employees.
Mine and Tommy’s friendship was formed in the hard manual labor of my dad’s tobacco fields. There were three Gaines brothers, Sammy, Tommy, and Junior. While none of the three had ever touched a set of weights, all three looke ..read more

Dang, one of our Yankee guests must have forgotten to close the back door when they headed south to hunt with us. BRR, it is colder than a well driller’s butt in the sunny south. Our wind chill temps came close to single digits, and we have more cold weather on the way.
I’m certain that many of you folks who live north of the Smith & Wesson line are thinking, what’s the big deal? You must remember that we southerners don’t put as much antifreeze in our systems as y’all do. Even our bird dogs are snuggling up with each other at night, but they do love the cold weather for hunting. Al ..read more
