Dear friends As you see from the news, to say that times are tough in Haiti would be a gross understatement.   If you are able, we really need your help. We literally never know what is going to happen each day. There is no government, gang violence is the rule of the day. We only know the effects: kidnapped, battered, terrorized, hungry and homeless people in ever growing numbers.   Even with these multiplied emergencies, the St Luc hospital and her many clinics remain open, our schools are timidly functioning, and  teachers are staying connected to their students ..read more

Dear friends We thank you for your January support for refugees! Thanks to you we were able to send food for hundreds more refugee families in Tabarre, Catalpa and Delmas 4. We will keep helping our neighbors in distress! You don't see me in the top left picture above, because I took it! Myself, Miguel and Edson trying to encourage Miguelson to keep studying hard even though things are difficult. You may think from news about Haiti that it is nearly impossible to achieve anything here. But what would be really tragic would be for children and youth to believe life is a dead end. Just having celebrated Christmas, we remember how the season of joy and wonder also memorializes an abhorrent massacre of babies in Bethlehem, and how the family of Jesus had to flee as refugees.  Massacres, the bondage of slavery, and refugees all across the globe have added a somber tone to our new year celebrations. The UN reports on their website that “more than 110 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations. We are now witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record.” Haiti is no exc ..read more

The Advent of Resilience

Dear Family and Friends, Advent, robed in purple, holds up before us the heaviness of pain. Advent, robed in rose, holds up before us the yearning for Eternal Peace.  Purple is the heavy darkness of life under gang rule in Haiti. Rose lights up the small victories over gang rule, like making it through another day, or freeing someone vulnerable from humiliating bondage. Purple dominated last week's celebrations of the "Day of Disabled Persons", when I was summoned by a notorious gang leader to meet him in the scrublands for "something urgent."  I imagined some stressful scenario ..read more

Dear family and friends, As I write these words, the violent rule of gangs in Port au Prince in increasing, and reaching our neighborhood, which is also the neighborhood of US Embassy. The Embassy is, during these very days, evacuating all non-emergency personnel. The effect on us is that our hospital now receives many warlike trauma and gunshot injuries, especially since the specialty hospital nearby that was managing them closed, precisely because of armed attack on their hospital. We cannot get surgeons to come to our area. It is a red zone. And like many hospitals in Port au Prince, w ..read more

“You are not here to find love, nor to be greeted by happiness at every turn, nor to be showered with kindness, nor to be appreciated by all, nor to forever remain a child. You came here to create love out of war, by God’s grace. Your soul eternal soul was created and placed into a stifling frame of bone, blood and flesh. Only here can inner strength be forged by pain, can wisdom be nurtured by failure, can love be the reward of those who choose to give love. Your soul struggles with the bitter things of life to know the sweetness of inner joy. There is no river of love that runs as deep as th ..read more
