I am starting to learn the COLREGS, just looking for any guidance to help streamline the learning process.
Any help would be appreciated.

Forums are a dying niche from the early days of the internet. There was a reddit thread the other day about “what do you miss about the old internet” and a lot of people were missing forums and chat rooms. gCaptain is a niche within a niche, perhaps a testimony to the mariners commitment to doing things the way we’ve always done them - with technology from the 90’s.
r/Maritime has 13.2k members and apparently had over 100k visitors last year. Dont know what the stats are here, I’m seeing 14,000 monthly visists but who knows how many actuve users that is. The conversation here is just as use ..read more

Ayo, I'm here to get some thoughts and opinions. I'm 19 years old and I would like to join the Merchant Marine. I know it's a great time, generation retiring in 5-10 years.
I've been accepted to a maritime school to study and receive my 3rd mate ticket. However I'm not entirely sure if I should go or if I'll be welcome. I'm transgender, born male but identity as female. I've been out for nearly 5 years now, taking hormones for 3 roughly. I pass as a cisgender (meaning not trans) woman most days. The only issue is none of my documents have been changed over, and I'm still pre op so nothing has ..read more

Not my story, but of the vessel I'll be joining shortly.
So this new captain says 1) AIS is not meant for collision avoidance, and that 2) officers of the watch should practice tracking targets by ARPA.
He went on to turn off the AIS on S-band radar and ordered that it should remain so.
Some days later a duty officer decided that he needs AIS info on the S-band radar and turned the AIS back on. The next duty officer kept it on, but the captain found out and proceeded to give him a verbal warning.
Yeah I get it, AIS is not for preventing collision, but shouldn't the duty officer fully be in ..read more

Hey there! I'm currently working on a research project and am attempting to find the destination of this ship, which left Quebec around August 2nd. I've confirmed the IMO to be 9509671, and the vessel goes by the names Atlantic Voyager II and AA Moon. Thanks!

Does anyone have a tactic they book their airline tickets for a year when working 28/28 then reschedule as needed? Does it end up costing more than booking a week prior to hitch ending?

How was the drug testing process for you all? How long was the wait?
I've got everything taken care of but my drug test, so I can't submit my application yet without it.
I've also looked into where my test was sent and the lab has horrible reviews of bad costumer service and failing clean people. So if it takes more than a week I may have to do another test elsewhere.

I had an offer back in September to do 2 months out, one month home rotations. The pay was phenomenal. The security company had just picked up a contract but was having trouble getting off the ground with the coordination with the Homeland, Coast Guard, etc. Apparently a lot of confusion with required certifications, training, etc.
That said, I've been ready to go and I'm stuck. Right now I'm just doing Executive Protection at home. I want to get out there though.
Does anyone recommend a security company I can sign on with that I won't need to wait months for to get going? I have a military ..read more

Going to be starting my bridge watch rating next year and I’m really excited to begin working in the industry! I’ve noticed most job postings don’t mention the work rotation or schedule so I thought I’d ask a few questions here.
Do you get paid daily or hourly
what’s your rotation like?
if you work a schedule where you have a month or more off, do you claim EI for that month? And do you still get benefits when you’re off?
Are longer rotations more common than shorter ones?
where (geographically) do you work? Are there many Canadian flagged ships that travel internationally (other than USA ..read more
