On November 30th, 2024 life drastically changed for 13-year old Jaden Barnett after he was placed in a chokehold by his teacher, Brockton Tatum, at W.R. Coile Middle School. His family is asking for community support to ensure that this teacher is held fully accountable in addition to demanding that school officials improve their communication, and provide a stronger academic and emotional support system for students who have been harmed at school, whether by their teacher or peers.

The body of a man was found in his pickup truck early Wednesday morning in northwestern Athens-Clarke County, where he possibly died while driving to the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Casey Roy Hobbs, 32, of Colbert, was deceased in a Dodge Ram pickup that a police officer found stopped on Jefferson Road near Kathwood Drive.
According to a police report, Hobbs had been shot by a bullet that entered his lower abdomen area, exited his leg and then struck the driver’s side door.

MACON, Ga. – Two metro Atlanta residents who pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges for their roles in the gang-related shooting deaths of three Athens, Georgia, residents were sentenced to prison this week.
Shabazz Larry Guidry, aka “Lil Larry,” 29, of Decatur, Georgia, was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison to be followed by four years of supervised release after he previously pleaded guilty to Racketeer Influenced and Corruption Organization (RICO) Conspiracy.

The ODYSSEY Media Group at Clarke Central High School and BluePrints student media organization at Cedar Shoals High School combined to win more than a dozen All-Georgia (best in the state) awards and notched more than 20 “Superior” ratings for their work during this school year in the 2024 Georgia Scholastic Press Association (GSPA) Awards. CCSD Students Selected to Governor’s Honors Program

The Clarke County School District says it is planning educational activities around the upcoming solar eclipse. Athens will get a glimpse of the April event. Although some schools in some cities are closing for the day, the central office on Prince Avenue says Clarke County schools will be open. Students will be given the special glasses needed to safely watch the eclipse that will take place on the afternoon of April 8.

The Clarke County Mentor Program, supported by the University of Georgia (UGA), has been pairing students with mentors for over 30 years. The program trains around 275 community volunteers, including 150 UGA students, to mentor students in the Clarke County School District.
Maggie DeMaria, a UGA student and Clarke Central High School graduate, is a mentor in the program. She is also the president of the Clarke County Mentors at UGA student organization. DeMaria mentors a sixth grader and has helped expand the UGA student organization after the COVID-19 pandemic.
