Helmets can protect you from head injury if worn correctly and properly cared for. But did you know that you should replace your helmet even if there’s no sign of damage? Just like when you replace the tires on your vehicle after so many miles to keep your vehicle safe, or you replace your pillows every few years due to loss of cushion, it is important to replace your riding helmet for safety reasons. When Should You Replace Your Helmet?  One K recommends you replace your helmet every four to five-years from the time of purchase, at the absolute maximum. MIPS Helmet Safety FAQ’s

The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) is designed to add protection against the rotational motion (or kinematics) transmitted to the brain from angled impacts to the head. The rotational motion is a combination of rotational energy (angular velocity) and rotational forces from angular acceleration that both affect the brain and increases the risk for minor and severe brain injuries. MIPS’ added protection system has been proven to reduce the rotational motion when implemented in a helmet by absorbing and redirecting energies and forces otherwise transmitted to the brain. Where can I see my MI ..read more

How Does MIPS work?

The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) is designed to add protection against rotational motion transferred to the brain. Rotational motion affects the brain and increase the risk for minor and severe brain injuries. When implemented in a helmet, the MIPS BPS can reduce rotational motion by redirecting energies and forces otherwise transferred to the brain.  The core of the MIPS BPS is a low friction layer that allows the head to move 10-15 mm relative the helmet in all directions, reducing rotational motion to the brain. The MIPS BPS makes your helmet safer and adds protection. Strain in ..read more

What is MIPS?

MIPS is a brain protection system — engineered to add protection to helmets The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) is found inside the helmet, generally between the comfort padding and the EPS (a high-quality foam used to reduce energy).  For certain impacts, the MIPS BPS can reduce harmful forces transmitted to the brain.  MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. Why do I need MIPS? Injury statistics show that when you fall and hit your head, it’s most common to fall at an angle, compared to a linear fall.  Falling at an angle creates rotational mo ..read more

Get Swayed By Suede

The use of suede is as old as the sport of equestrian itself. Suede was born from processing the inside of otherwise unusable leather. As the underside of leather skin, suede is buffed to the point of a velvety feel. The versatile fabric is soft and can be made from any leather, but most popular is lambskin, cow, and pigskin. In history, the wearing of suede was considered a luxury and status symbol because of the additional expense of the added processing needed to create the texture.  The soft, delicate feel reflects the high-end luxury, but suede is known for its durability compared t ..read more

Correct helmet fit is important not only for safety but also for comfort. A helmet should fit nice and snug on your head without it being too tight and the harness in the front should have a nice V when you snap up the chinstrap. Step 1 (Measuring): Start by measuring around the head above the ears and just above the eyebrows. Helmets come in various sizes, and each manufacturer will have their own sizing chart. You can find the One K helmet-sizing chart on OneKHelmets.com. Try on several different helmets in your size until you find one that feels comfortable. Helmets come in a variety of ..read more

It Would Have Been Much Worse Without My One K Helmet My brain surgeon adores my One K Helmet. How’s that for an endorsement? Not many riders can probably say that, but it’s true! A little backstory: In 2012, I flew to Argentina for work. When I landed back stateside, I had vertigo that I could not shake. After the usual horsewoman’s process of ignoring, chanting, home remedies and tincture of time (6 weeks to be exact) didn’t work, I figured I should really go to the doctor. I left there with a script for a contrast MRI, and a few days later was told that I have Chiari Malformation, which bas ..read more
