I’ll never forget the moment on October 20, 2022, when we learned that both my husband Eric Li and I had been admitted to Fuqua. We hugged and cheered together with our two kids. My husband and I used to be classmates in junior high, and now we’re classmates again! Fuqua let us relive our campus days, reminding us of when we first met 25 years ago. Moving from China to the U.S. was a big step for us, especially with two little kids, but the information we received during our MBA application process with Fuqua made us confident about our decision and the international move that followed. Knowing Fuqua was the Right Fit for My MBA

My decision to pursue an MBA came with a lot of uncertainty. While I knew that I wanted to continue my education, I wasn’t sure what that education would look like. I did not know anyone who had recently graduated from an MBA program, and I had read that B-school culture revolved around drinking alcohol, lavish vacations to far-off destinations, and a myopic focus on profit. The elements of life that bring me the most joy—from time in the mountains to my faith and making music with others—seemed at odds with the B-school norm. As I explained in my last blog, I was attracted to the versatility ..read more

What Teamwork Looks Like at Fuqua

My first two terms at Fuqua (actually, three if you include the short summer term) were more than a whirlwind. Coming from an environmental think tank in Washington, D.C., I was used to people thinking and behaving a certain way. My friend group began to reflect that. All of a sudden, I was—voluntarily, of course—thrown into an environment of uncertainty and adrenaline, sip circles and coffee chats, and small talk in every corner of my new life in Durham. On top of that, I recently got engaged and would be away from my fiancé, Olivia, who is pursuing her master’s in environmental management at ..read more

Pursuing Professional and Personal Interests Through Club Leadership

A common anecdote I heard from Fuqua students when I began my application process back in 2021 was that many things are student-run at Duke. Now, as graduation quickly approaches in May, I find myself saying the same thing to prospective students who reach out to me. Embedding Myself in the Fuqua Community The first year is extremely busy at any MBA program, but at Fuqua, I was still able to get involved as a first-year cabinet member for the general management, board game and Fuqua fitness clubs. In hindsight, I am so happy I was able to join these clubs in a leadership role. Not only did it ..read more

How HSM Helped Me Get a Job Leading Health Care Innovations

I still vividly remember the moment I started my journey in Fuqua at the HSM Bootcamp, hosted by Fuqua’s Center for Health Sector Management. I was excited about a two-year experience that I knew was going to be transformative. In the very first class, the professor asked us to raise our hands if we had prior experience in health care as providers or with payers, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices. I found myself in a somewhat awkward position because I was involved in health care but in none of these major industries. Before Fuqua, I worked in the chemical industry as a research and developm ..read more

My Academic Journey at Fuqua

When I was researching business school options, I knew that I wanted to be in an academic environment that was both fast-paced and collaborative. Many business school programs tout the uniqueness of their offerings, from focusing on a certain style of teaching, to the ability to customize your course load. I found Fuqua’s blend of these options to be the best fit for me, as well as providing a supportive and team-oriented cohort to boot. My Fuqua journey has been transformative so far—both in and outside the classroom—and I know that my professors and classes played a major role in that. Core ..read more

As co-presidents of the Jewish Business Association (JBA), we are passionate about contributing to Fuqua’s diverse community. We welcome both Jewish and non-Jewish students to join the JBA in participating with, and learning about, Jewish culture and events. To showcase how the JBA engages with the broader community, we’ve reflected on our favorite experiences leading JBA, and what the club has meant to us over our two years at Fuqua. What has the JBA meant to you? Sofie: Being Jewish has always been an essential aspect of my identity. The JBA allows me to honor and celebrate this part of myse ..read more

When applying to Fuqua, I was seeking a nurturing environment that embraces diverse cultures and fosters a sense of belonging. I plan to use my MBA to pivot into sustainability and renewable energies after working in oil and gas. Knowing that the energy industry is dynamic, constantly evolving, and demanding of innovative solutions to its unique challenges, Fuqua’s programming resonated deeply with my career aspirations. From clubs to dedicated faculty expertise and the Center for Energy, Development and the Global Environment (EDGE), I was drawn to Fuqua’s specialized focus on energy, but I w ..read more

Managing Quantitative Classes Without a Quant Background

When I think about the poets and quants at business school, I lean heavily poet. After studying sociology in undergrad (and successfully petitioning out of my one required statistics class), I spent my pre-Fuqua work years in fundraising and communications for grassroots nonprofits. I am incredibly proud of my work experience and the impact it made on people’s lives, but it is not the typical path to an MBA. Like many “nontraditional” students, I battled imposter syndrome coming into business school. I turned over the idea of going back to school for my MBA in my mind for a long time before de ..read more

The Benefits of Pursuing a Dual Degree
Duke Daytime MBA Student Blog
by Ross Fly

For most people, clicking “accept” on their admission offer is the culminating step in a long and arduous journey to attend Fuqua. However, when I made that selection in 2022, there was still one more decision left for me to make—whether to simultaneously pursue a Master of Environmental Management (MEM) degree at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment. Earning a dual degree meant I would delay the start of my MBA education for a year. Instead of two years of MBA classes, I would have a year of MEM classes, followed by a year of MBA classes, and then a year of classes at both schools. When ..read more
