They flitted in front of the hole and tried to squeeze through, but to no avail. A couple of days later, I again noticed the pair trying to squeeze through the entrance. Woodpeckers make holes in wood by hammering with their beaks. But our mystery bird digs in the soil, not in wood. Like woodpeckers, these birds have strong necks, heads, and bills.
