Neroli essential oil has always been one of my favourite fragrances. It’s why I use it in so many of my products. It is extracted from the blossom of the Seville Orange Tree (the same oranges used to make marmalade). These slightly bitter oranges have a unique fragrance and taste. Neroli is described by the […] The post Neroli Essential Oil – Why It’s Fabulous appeared first on The Maldon Soap Company ..read more

Look how curly my hair used to be! This photo was taken well before the onset of peri-menopause and hot flushes. I rarely tied my hair back unless I was cooking or gardening.  I left it loose and it never seemed to get in the way.  Even when I was working fulltime in shops unboxing […] The post Getting my curls back appeared first on The Maldon Soap Company ..read more

All about Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is an incredible substance. The Aloe I use comes from the Aloe Vera Barbadensis plant (although there are many other varieties that are also beneficial). What Can Aloe Vera Help With? ?Minor burns – apply aloe vera gel to the affected area up to 3 times daily. ?Sunburn – while it can help soothe sunburn it is NOT an effective way of preventing sunburn and is no substitute for wearing sun protection. ?Skin scuffs – If you’ve scuffed your skin apply neat aloe vera gel to the area for quick relief from pain and burning. ?Cuts – aloe vera boosts your collagen and fighting bacteria so pop ..read more

What does a soap maker actually do?

I’m Sue, the owner and creator of The Maldon Soap Company. I started my business 10 years ago from my kitchen worktop whilst managing the local heritage centre. In 2015 I left the security of my regular job and started making soap full time in my little soap shack. It was a struggle at first with no safety net but I persevered. For 8 years I worked alone but in 2021 my daughter in law Lauren started working 2 mornings a week for me, sending out all my web orders. She also wraps all the soaps for me, which I used to spend every evening doing. So now I have my evenings back – to do admin instead ..read more

What Makes My Handmade Soap So Special?

I hate packaging! So when I first started making and selling my soaps back in 2013 I wanted them to be as packaging free as possible. However, I’ve seen first hand that unwrapped soap in shops looks wonderful when it’s first made and put on display and it makes a real focal point. But it doesn’t matter how careful you are, as the weeks go on unwrapped soap shrinks, warps and gets covered in fibres, hair, dust and nail marks from being handled. I’ve even seen a bar of soap with teeth marks in it – don’t ask! After all the hard work and gorgeous organic ingredients that I put into my soaps I de ..read more

Here’s a cautionary tale about hand creams. How they are not all equal. Some may smell amazing, some may be great value for money but when you look into it are they great value? Are they great for your skin? Read on to find out… My glycerine & lavender intensive hand cream is £17.50 for 100g. That’s quite a lot. Not as much as some but more than a lot of other hand creams on the market. You can buy hand creams for under a fiver in supermarkets. You can get them for £1 in pound shops. And, of course, you can buy them for various different amounts from all cosmetics suppliers. How your hand ..read more

Psoriasis is a common, long-term chronic disease with no cure. It affects approximately 2% of the people in the UK and can start at any age. Most often though, it develops in adults under the age of 35. Often confused with eczema, it tends to go through similar cycles, with flare-ups occurring and then subsiding for a while. But it is actually a completely different disease to eczema and needs a different treatment. What is Psoriasis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes red silvery crusty patches to appear on your body. It’s most commonly seen on the knees, elbows, scalp and lowe ..read more
