Solutions for apartments
There’s a problem for people living in medium and high density apartments as they lift ambition for climate action: Apartment blocks have limited roof space per apartment for solar PV and limited options for sharing stored energy for self-consumption and charging EVs.
To address this problem, our team will continue to research and demonstrate innovative solutions including:
vertically-mounted PVs on an eastern wall
vertically mounted bi-facial PVs facing east-west
PV trees
behind-the-meter solar and storage sharing
a comparison of innovative battery storage options

The city can save the planet.
– Dr Paul Downton – architect and co-founder of Christie Walk eco village

But because we are constantly rebuilding cities anyway, “the city can save the planet”, one neighbourhood at a time, if we build Ecocities.

2021 – Battery options modelling
In September 2020 we installed our first battery at Sturt Apartments, Christie Walk. You can read the story of our modelling, battery choices and lessons learned in Episode 7 – Battery storage – Tesla PowerWall 2
Everything had gone to plan with the installation of the battery; performance was as expected. The savings generated by our PV upgrade and the battery were flowing into our Green Fund, enabling us to begin planning for the installation of our second battery.
Our modelling indicated that our 21kW PVs were generating enough power to usefully support ..read more
