June 19-22, 2024 marks the days that Jersey breeders country-wide will descend on Springfield, Mass., for the AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings. For the fourth consecutive year, the Jersey breed has set records for all measures of production. Statistics released by the American Jersey Cattle Association show Registered Jerseys are now producing more milk, fat, protein and cheese than ever. The nutrient density of that milk is greater too with record-high tests for both fat and protein tests in 2023. The official lactation average for Registered Jerseys is now 20,710 lbs. milk, 1,038 lbs. fat and 778 lbs. protein on a standardized mature equivalent (m.e.) basis. To be eligible for the Living Lifetime Production Contest, cows must be alive as of December 31, 2023, with either minimum production credits on DHIR test of 225,000 lbs. milk, 10,000 lbs. fat, and 8,000 lbs. protein. In 2023, the prices for Registered Jerseys sold at public auctions fell in line with recent trends. Based on sales reported to the Jersey Journal, the American Jersey Cattle Association reports a new historical high breed average of $4,009.86 on 938 head. Though the average shatters the previous record from 2022, it is skewed by the sale of several elite animals. The median of $2,000 is a more realistic assessment of prices paid at public auction. On Saturday, November 4, 2023, over 50 Jersey youth members signed up to participate in the second “Give Us Your Best 60-Second Intro” public speaking contest in Louisville, Ky. Held during the All American festivities, the contest drew participants ranging from the age of five to 21. Twenty-four juniors invested in their herds and became eligible to earn prizes in the 2026 Pot O’Gold Production Contest with a purchase from the Pot O’Gold Sale on November 3, 2023. The five bred heifers, six open yearlings and 13 heifer calves were struck off at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky., for an average of $2,643.75 and a gross of $63,450. The All American Jersey Sale continued its proud tradition of offering the best-of-the-best again this year for the 71st sale of the series.
