Leading, Following, Driver and Passenger

Why is there a dance Leader and a dance Follower? It’s for the same reason cars don’t have two steering wheels i.e. one for the intended driver, the other for the front passenger. On the wedding dance floor (like in a car), one person is in charge of making decisions whilst the other simply follows. I’ve personally supported many same-sex wedding dance couples, including the discussion around, on the dancefloor, who will be the Leader and who will be the Follower. On numerous occasions, after learning a few dance steps, the “Leader” wants to swap roles with the “Follower” contesting they’re le ..read more

How Many Lessons are Needed?

The number of private wedding dance lessons required depends on three considerations … Firstly … For how much of the wedding dance song does the couple want to be the only two people dancing to that song? For example, a couple may choose to dance the first two minutes of a four-minute song before the wedding guests are invited to join the couple on the dance floor. Alternatively, the couple may choose to love their wedding dance routine, dancing to their entire wedding dance song. Secondly … How much at-home practice time will the wedding dance couple have? The more at-home practice (supp ..read more

Should Your Wedding Dance Song be the recorded Original Artist or cover by a Live Band?

Your Wedding Dance Song should be the recorded original artist unless a pre-recorded demo by the live band is provided to you. Live music can be amazing at any occasion. However, in the world of dance there’s an expression, “Music is King (or Queen)”! You’ll be learning your wedding dance routine to a particular version of your song, often being the original artist. This song version is the exact format you’re used to. If there’s a sudden change of format on the night of your wedding dance, this could be very disasterous! If you’re heartfelt for a live band version, ensure the band has provide ..read more

Is Dancing Good for Your Fitness?

Dancing is good for your fitness! It promotes both physical health and mental health, and is relatively cheaper than say an expensive gym membership. This is especially true for dancing in the social, group lessons and likewise for the (slightly more expensive) private dance lessons (but where the rate of learning is rapid). According to the National Library of Medicine (please click here), dancing enhances physical well-being by furthering strength, suppleness, coordination and balance in varying quantities. The more ‘energetic’ forms of dance (e.g. Salsa, Cha Cha and Merengue) provide fantas ..read more

How Much Should You Pay for a Private Wedding Dance Lesson?

You should pay for a private Wedding Dance lesson only on a casual, pay-as-you-go basis, one lesson at a time. It’s simply impossible for a couple to know in advance how many dance lessons they will need. The number of lessons needed for any Wedding Couple is based on three considerations. For how much of their chosen Wedding Dance Song does the couple want to be the only two people dancing on the Dance Floor? How much at-home practice time will each couple have in between the private dance lessons? At what rate will the wedding couple learn dance (i.e. faster than most, about average or ..read more

How Long Before Your Wedding Should You Learn Dance?

Learning how to dance is a little similar to learning other muscle-memory activities like golf, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, martial arts, etc. All of these activities take time to learn. Add to this, a Wedding Dance involves two people each learning their respective dance steps, learning to dance with each other and together dancing to a routine customised to their chosen Wedding Dance Song. Again, this takes time and guided practice. Additionally, their are some off the dance floor considerations. Does either the Bride or Groom need to frequently travel? Are the Bride and Groom “passing shi ..read more

How to Learn a Wedding Dance

Some Dance Instructors prefer to write and present an entire Wedding Dance routine to a couple in the beginning of their very first lesson. The couple are then encouraged to learn the entire choreography, in its entirety, from the beginning to its end. This means, at the wedding, the couple must exactly complete their dance routine perfectly. However, after nearly 20yrs of dance teaching experience with thousands of wonderful students, I take a “crawl, walk, run” approach. Learn a small number of individual dance steps. Be presented with a choreography, written by me. I’ll use the individu ..read more

How Many Lessons Do You Need for a Wedding Dance?

The number of lessons needed for your Wedding Dance depends on three considerations. For how long do you and your partner intend to be the only two people on the dance floor? You may simply choose to dance half of song (until others join you), all of the song or perhaps a mash-up of extracts from numerous songs. Naturally, the longer you’re the only two people on the dance floor, the more dance steps needed to populate this time-frame. The more steps to learn, then the more lessons will be needed. How often will you and your partner have the opportunity for at-home practice whilst being be ..read more

Her Wedding Dance Shoes

So, what’s the best footwear for a Bride to wear during her Wedding Dance? Firstly, if you’re wearing a full-length Wedding Dress, ensure your dancing shoes are the SAME HEIGHT as the shoes you were wearing during the final dress fitting. For example, if your dancing shoes have a far shorter heel than the shoes worn during the final fitting, your dress will spill down and over the dance floor, creating an obstacle for your Groom. Secondly, if you plan to wear heeled shoes, avoid a stiletto heel and instead choose a platform heel. The wider heel base will provide you significantly more stabilit ..read more

Your Wedding Day will a wonderful day, a long day and a day full of emotions. Then, during all of this, someone invites you to have your Wedding Dance together whilst being videoed by family and friends! WOW! There’s so much happening! For this reason, having attended hundreds of weddings as a Celebrant, MC & DJ, I encourages my Wedding Dance couples to schedule a final dance practice at their wedding. If the Wedding Dance is to happen immediately upon the couple entering the Reception, the practice can occur when they’re away from (almost) everyone getting outdoor photos taken, If the Wed ..read more
