The Camino continues to grow with 446,039 Compostelas delivered in a year without a jubilee but in which the shadow of the pandemic seems to have definitively disappeared. In 2023, 187,185 Spaniards and 243,141 foreigners collected the Compostela, that is, only 44% were Spanish, so the percentage of foreigners continues to grow. The international and global character of the Camino is strengthened. Of them, 404,178 traveled the Camino on foot; 22,881 by bicycle; 5,726 by boat; 606 on horseback; 276 under sail; and 198 in a wheelchair. One of the great news this year was the enormous growth in p ..read more

When I finished my first Camino de Santiago on New Year’s Eve in 2010, I was very likely the last pilgrim to receive their Compostela that year. The pilgrims’ office was closed, the Holy Door was also closed, and the celebratory Mass to conclude the Holy Year had ended. I was ushered into the sacristy of the Cathedral where I was met by D. Jenaro Cebrián Franco. He gave me my Compostela. I remember telling him I was from New York. In 2010, a scant 3,333 more American pilgrims received Compostelas along with me. We were 1.23% of the total number that Holy Year and 6th in line after Spain, with ..read more

-Journalist and technician from Xacobeo specialized in the Camino de Santiago, in recent years you had gotten very close to research… and then you surprised us with a novel. How did the project of writing a novel come about? When did that desire appear? – The idea for this novel arose in 2006. It was simple, I was a journalist for many years and then I arrived at Xacobeo, a job in which I became interested in the history of the Camino and the history of the Cathedral of Santiago. In that context I became interested in the story of the theft of the cross of Alfonso III and that is where the ide ..read more

The true historical and geographical dimension of the Camino Inglés, the forgotten way: “The North of Europe on the pilgrimage to Compostela. “The English Way”
Fundación Jacobea
by fjacobea
7M ago
Through this maritime route, thousands of pilgrims from northern Europe arrived in Galicia, especially the port of La Coruña, between the 11th and 16th centuries, to continue by land to the tomb of the Apostle Santiago. This second edition – now in the English version – has the purpose of disseminating, among those interested in the Jacobean movement in Europe, the history of the sea route to Compostela from England, Ireland, Iceland, Scandinavian and Baltic countries, as well as informing them of the numerous Jacobean vestiges preserved in those countries: names of temples and streets, painti ..read more

Alfonso García López (Madrid, 1942), since his retirement in 2012 as a notary for the city of La Coruña, has dedicated his free time to continue writing. He regularly collaborates with personal articles in the press: in El Correo Gallego, with a fortnightly column entitled “With common sense”, and a weekly column in the digital newspaper Mundiario.com. “Since 1999 I have published 15 books on different topics, because “variety is what amuses me.” He has written two books of children’s stories, two about the Red Cross and the ICRC, two about grandparents of particular politicians of today, thre ..read more

The Camino resists with 1,1193 Compostelas delivered in a month of December marked by the sixth wave of covid-19. The majority of Spaniards, but 30% of foreigners from various countries in Europe (1,084), America (79), Asia (22), Oceania (5) and Africa (3), confirm that the pilgrimage to Santiago has not lost its essentially international nature, even over Christmas. In December 1,193 pilgrims collected the Compostela: 678 men and 515 women. 1,168 of them traveled the Camino on foot; 21 by bicycle; 2 by sail; 1 on horseback; 1 in a wheelchair. Their nationalities were: 809 Spain; 70 Portugal ..read more

The Camino after the pandemic: Paco Castro

The Camino goes on* Peace and goodness: Saint Teresa of Jesus said (wrote) that they had to live in “tough times” back then, and we could almost apply this same nomenclature to current times, after the break caused by the pandemic; a parenthesis, in general – in life, and in particular on the Camino de Santiago. Now it seems that everything is returning to a certain normality, at least in our wishes, and for this reason the different Jacobean routes are once again crowded with their true members : the Pilgrims who, each with their lives in tow, each one with his/her own motivation, or several ..read more
