The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

The James Webb Space Telescope reveals a region of previously obscured stars. (NASA) Night after night, young David, the psalmist and shepherd of Israel, gathered his sheep into the walled sheepfold and rested in the entry. There he could see in the heavens the evidence of the glory of God, the creator. David wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge” (Ps. 19:1–2, NIV). The heavens continually reveal knowledge of God’s attributes, power, and divine nature: “For since ..read more

Evangelizing Kids through VBS

Kids participate in a photo shoot for Regular Baptist Press’s 2018 VBS program, Camp Moose-on-Loose: Discovering God’s Forever Forgiveness. Ah, the crack of a bat! It’s easy to get a baseball fan excited about spring. The popularity of “America’s pastime” has led to metaphors such as “touch base” and “hit it out of the park.” But before anyone touches a base or scores a home run, something else—a fundamental action—must happen: the batter must hit the ball (or, yes, be walked). Just as there’s a prerequisite for running the bases, there is one for genuine, effective spiritual growth: the si ..read more

Pastors meet for prayer at a Regular Baptist International conference in Bangkok, Thailand. What Your Church Needs to Know (and Do) Most of us will never meet Pastor Nang Za Thawn, but we’re related. He recently led an outdoor baptism service in the Chin Hills region of Myanmar while members of Evangelical Baptist Church watched from the shore. Despite his remote location and reduced access after a military coup, he would never describe his ministry as isolated. He stays connected through Regular Baptist International, a worldwide network of Baptist ministries. Nang also serves as president ..read more

A Peek around the Corner

My wife and I drive an SUV with a rather unique feature: around-the-corner headlights. I know that’s not the real name, but you get the idea. As the car turns, the headlights actually move into the turn, illuminating a bit around the corner. Let’s see what, figuratively, the headlights reveal around the corner. My service as interim national representative for the last two years has been invigorating yet tiring, requiring my full attention and effort. The Council of 18 has given me wide latitude to make necessary decisions, and the Regular Baptist Ministries staff has been most encouraging, c ..read more

The Next Episode in RBP

Matt Olmstead shares his vision for RBP in a GARBC Council of Eighteen meeting that focused on praying and planning. “Hello world!” On any WordPress website installation, these words pop up as the title of the default post; they symbolize the beginning of a new website. And this is my beginning, my first article as director of Regular Baptist Press. Hello, world! This opportunity humbles me. The word awesome is overused by my generation, but I can think of no better word to describe my sentiments toward this next episode in RBP’s history. I am following in the footsteps of many great and go ..read more

Evangelism is the act of proclaiming the truth of Jesus Christ—the gospel—to the unconverted. It’s an important skill. Yet many Christians struggle, not with knowing the truths about the gospel, but with strategically navigating their conversations toward the gospel. “How do I get from small talk to telling this person about Jesus?” you might say. Creation is one avenue for steering a conversation toward the gospel. The weather, animals at the zoo, pets, and nighttime stars all provide topics of conversation that can be steered toward the gospel. The heavens declare God’s glory! Remember and ..read more

What’s Wrong with Christian Nationalism?

Imagine that the mayor of your town comes to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Imagine you are the one to lead the mayor to Christ. What counsel would you give this new believer as the next steps of obedience in his or her newfound faith in Christ? Would we say, “Christians should not be involved in politics” and tell the mayor to quit his or her job? No. We would rejoice that the mayor is a believer and would likely uphold that leadership position in Biblical ways. Maybe Proverbs 29:2 would come to mind: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the p ..read more

Though Dead, He Still Speaks

How Jonathan Edwards Can Help Churches Today Occasionally, churches must answer questions about passing fads. But most of the time they need to answer the more fundamental questions of life. One of the most basic of them all is this: What is the nature of true religion? Or to state the question another way, How do we recognize a genuine work of the Spirit of God from its many counterfeits? The importance of answering fundamental questions well cannot be overemphasized. At stake is our ability to distinguish between saving faith and dead faith and from true converts and false. We owe a debt of ..read more

A Christian’s Purpose in the Harvest
Baptist Bulletin

What is your purpose as a Christian? Why has God placed you on earth? The Bible often refers to God using people in specific services or ministries. For instance, Paul indicates he was called by God to be a missionary, and the Old Testament priests were called by God to their priestly duties. God has chosen each of us for a particular purpose. When we become aware of and follow God’s will, we live out God’s purpose. But we sometimes have trouble discerning what work God has placed us on earth to do for Him. You have reached the end of this article preview. This article was published in the ..read more

A Song for Married Ears Only?

Timothy and Angela Little talk about the book they wrote together, Song of Songs for Singles. Thirty-two years old. As I sat in my second PhD course, the professor gave an assignment concerning the Song of Solomon. Although I had earned a bachelor’s degree and three master’s degrees and had been a professor of Hebrew for nearly ten years, I was still confused when it came to the Song’s message. And when students asked about its message, I would respond, “That’s one of those books I still need to study.” But the Song of Solomon was difficult, and I had not taken the time to understand it. Th ..read more
