There are no real human on planet Earth. Does this sound absurd? Well, it may be, but this is a fact. Let’s go into the basics and find out what differentiates a human from other life forms? Did you say “humaneness”?  You are spot on! It literally means “sympathetic concern for the well-being of others” There are about 38 words which describe humaneness. To me, the important ones are compassion and consideration for others. Being kind is not only to our fellow human beings, but also to all living things. One of my spiritually elevated friends goes one step further to say that we have to b ..read more

For want of a better word, we are currently using PWD (Person With Disabilities) for Special Needs Children in government circulars and legal documents. Using my brain’s magnifying glass, I tried my level best to find out what is the disability in them.  Instead, I found that these children are exceptionally talented and have astonishing skills. There are some children who cannot read or write but can memorise the songs or poem, some can solve 1000 plus pieces of jigsaw in a few minutes. In spite of their physical challenges like balancing due to cerebral palsy, or Down’s Syndrome, they c ..read more

One of the venues for the World Cup Cricket 2023 Tournament is Dharamshala.  On 22 Oct 2023, India beat New Zealand in Dharamshala. The administrative Headquarters of Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala took me down my memory lane.  In Dec 1969, after completing the Young Officers’ Course in the School of Artillery Deolali, I was posted to 191 Mountain Regiment at Yol Camp, about 20 kms from Dharamshala. Those days we had heavy, medium, field, mountain and light artillery regiments. Light regiments had mules and fired 120 mm Mortars. Mountain regiments like 191, had 76 m ..read more

We all know that that Happiness is a state of mind but what if we had a magic wand by which we can spread happiness to all. Sounds great! This magic wand was with Shri Bhasker, one of the residents of Covai S3 Retirement Community, Coimbatore. For every opportunity he got, he made sure he brought a smile on other people. To give an example of his Happiness Formula, if you are conducting a Tambola game for 1 hour and the number of participants is fifty, he would say, “with this game you brought in 50 hours (50 x 1hr) of Happiness!” He was an embodiment of positivity and happiness which would au ..read more

Team CovaiCare and I  launched our first experimental project  in senior living and care about 20 years ago in Coimbatore. In these 20 years, I have also grown younger to 75 years of age from 55 years. I was fortunate to understand this segment.  I realise that while age is a number, ageing can be hilarious. In India, above 60 years of age gives you the right to call yourself senior citizen (with no concessions in income tax, or airline ques or getting a seat in a crowded bus etc,) With longevity, meaning that senior citizens are not dying young, the age of departure from planet ..read more

Realty & Reality: We need Roti, Kapada and Makan. But along with real estate (realty) or Makan, we also need services that we look forward to. Real Estate projects be it independent houses, apartments, villaments or combination of all and termed as “Gated Community,” with swanky club houses, swimming pools, gymnasiums, walkways, children’s park, elders’ corner, green areas or lung-spaces, amazing architecture, specifications par excellence etc., are known as “normal” real estate.  But normal real estate does not give basic services that families need. Normal real estate projects leave ..read more

It’s 7 AM. Every member in the house feel the tremor and shattering of vessels. Wait a minute, it is not a Tornado or a hurricane but the woman of that house is trying to complete ten different things before she leaves for office including packing lunches for her family. On the contrary, the man of the house is like the eye of the storm, very calm, composed and reading the newspaper with the cup of coffee made by his wife! For working women it is always a double whammy as they have to work two shifts in a day, one official and one at home. She has to wear different hats for different situation ..read more

Vanakkam.Namaskar. My name is Krishnan and I am 78 years old. The topic of my podcast is not a pleasant one, but I consider this as one of the most important issues that we face as senior citizens. The last few months have seen several of my close friends and relatives pass away and I realise that this is not unique to me. I request your indulgence and patience as I go through some difficult thoughts on managing grief. Last week, I woke up one morning to learn about the demise of one of the most respected, valued and admired residents of the retirement community that we live in. I felt really ..read more
