Are Schutzhund and Therapy Dog Training Incompatible?

Hello fellow forum members! I have a question about training - has anyone trained their Dobe for both Schutzhund competition and as a therapy/educational dog? I'm asking because I'm seriously considering having my Dobe Pippi do both - she's got the potential to do very well in Schutzhund, but is also so sweet and docile around children, that I'm considering doing both with her. On the surface it may seem odd - having a dog train in Schutzhund - a portion of which involves controlled... Read more ..read more

Hello again everyone! I’ve asked this before back when onyx was 8 months old, questions around anxiety, but I’m back to get some additional help. We live in downtown Toronto, he’s been here since he was 2 months old and he’s always struggled with things like garbage cans, garbage bags, anyone getting off a courier truck with a box, anything flying in the wind, all sandwich boards outside stores.. the list goes on. We have done quite literally everything to help him through. We have a private... Read more ..read more

Just going to start a training progress thread here for Flint. We are getting the hang of loose leash walking but he's still a butthead sometimes. My goal is to walk him off leash in a heel position through a busy area with no issues by the beginning of May. I am currently taking Shield K9's Off-Leash course. So far I really like it. Things are explained and demonstrated well on multiple dogs that are not trained throughout the videos. These videos were taken last week. I am now... Read more ..read more

I haven't watched this yet, I've got to commit to over 2 hours because I'm pretty sure I won't want to stop once I get started! These are two of the best trainers, both are pretty down to earth and the content description sounds like it will be chock full of information in discussion format. Thought I'd share it here in case anyone else admires these guys & wants to learn more. In the description there's a timeline of topics discussed so you can get an idea of what the video will... I can't say I purposely trained this. Asha as a puppy though was always, always redirected if she picked up anything that was not hers. So the other day I did a town run. 2 packages of beef ribs and I forgot my insulated bag that zips up. Asha was in the truck because we were going to practice obedience on the way home. I had yet a Walmart run to do. She often gets in the front seat when I'm gone into a store for a while, so the only thing I could think to do is put the treat bag... Read more ..read more

My male doberman is 18 weeks now and i got him at 10 weeks. my female dachshund (8 years) will not stop barking at him. In the backyard they play together with her occasionally barking. There’s been a few times where she escalated very fast and had bit him so hard he whined. The doberman is very sweet and i understand his energy may be a lot for her, but he really has never been that aggressive with her besides normal puppy doberman behavior. He mostly stays upstairs with me. The only times... Read more ..read more

4 Year Old Intact Male - Marking Everything

Hi, question for those smarter and more experienced than us is how we can be better owners to help our 4 yr old male un-neutered Dobie stop marking so much. In the past 2 years his marking has gone up 500%. He now pees on every structure in his backyard, the bbq, bikes, AC unit, plants...I saw him mark a beetle walking in the dirt. I have a hunch it's because there's (always) been a family of squirrels living in our huge pine tree and he's feeling like his domain is threatened, but...when I... Read more ..read more

Asha has been a bull-in-a-china-shop all her life, and now that she's grown, her bulldozing at full speed is down right lethal. Recall in obedience was once fine, now she comes barreling at me and instead of sliding to a stop she slams into me head on. For fun. Obviously, this won't pass in Obedience, she almost knocks me over. Same with returning with a thrown ball. Yesterday she was zooming around and side swiped me going by from behind hitting the calf of my leg so hard I can barely walk... Read more ..read more
