Hello everyone. I am seeking some advice on a couple of issues we are having with a 5 to 6 year old (SILVER) Labrador Retriever who has obedience issues. My wife is now pregnant and I have 7 months to try to get our dog to follow our commands the first time, every time. At this stage she does not really follow commands at all, especially when she is hyperactive. The only thing we can get her to respond to are these phrases -> She does understand "bed" and will run... SILVER LABRADOR - OBEDIENCE ISSUES - BABY ON WAY - HELP ..read more

The Use of Food in Dog Training

This forum promotes and supports the use of modern positive reinforcement dog training techniques. To younger folk and to those that have been taught positive reinforcement training from the start, the use of food in dog training is completely normal and natural. But to many people in their forties and over, the use of food is seen as some kind of weakness or failing A lot of people are put off positive reinforcement training because of taboos and concerns about training dogs with food.... My chocolate lab peanut has a beautiful temperament, no barking, no aggressiveness at all and very cuddly. But the second he gets over excited the jumping and snatching things and running away behaviour starts. Occasional mouthing but this has improved massively!! The main concern at the moment is the lunging on walks he’s walked a minimum of 3 times a day 20 minute walks, and has free time in a big garden. He gets 1 good walk a week like around lakes and through big parks. The second he... 11 month old lab lunging on walks and jumping up ..read more

How do I react after dog returns from rabbit chase?

Hello, my Labrador who is about 18 months loves to run off chasing rabbit. It does not matter what activities we were engadged in, rabbit chasing is more rewarding. After she returns to her senses, she reacts to my recall and returns to me. This can take up to 5 to 30 minutes. My question is how do I react when she comes? Do I reward her for comming or should I punish her or just ignore the situation as if nothing happened? I live in a large city and this area is the only area near us that... Hi, I have a 9 month old male labrador called harley. He's amazing and we love him dearly but there are certain times where he seems to switch and will kind of attack me. I know it's not aggression, Think it's over excitement and sometimes even anxiety. He will go mental, running at me flat out and will jump up and bite my hands, arms and body. It's really hurts and occasionally draws blood and rips clothing. We can't seem to find anything that really works, we just have to fight our way... 9 month old labrador jumps up and bites, really hurts and can't seem to snap him out of it ..read more

My 9 months old black lab and I are attending training classes since he got all the necessary vaccines. The trainer uses mostly positive training methods, with some aversive ones which I just try to ignore. But lately she has been pushing me to get a halti for my biy, since he is pulling a lot more in the presence of other dogs. He is in peek adolescence and we had to take quite a few steps back in training which I don't mind. We went back to basics with basic commands, recall and heel...
