Hello everyone,
i recently adopted a 22 month old GSD named Carter, he was at a shelter for just under a year. He is a strong and active dog weighing in about 75 pounds. We’ve been together 8 days now. He generally settling in well, he does his business outside. We’ve kept him in the garage with his crate and toys and bring him around the house a few times a day to the get him accustomed to a child in the house.
I’ve been able to teach him sit, down(kinda), stay, come and his name but he...

I mix up the rewards that I use in training. Ball on rope, tug, ball, cylinder, bite pillow are all in the rotation. What are the thoughts on this? Do you guys stick with a single toy reward?
FYI, she isn’t motivated by treats so we don’t use them in training ..read more

The dog I have now walks comfortably on a leash, doesn’t try to pull or jump and sticks close to me. Otherwise she has no training at all. I put away my Herm Sprenger and Dogtra. I’m considering a Martingale, which I swore I would never use or an English slip lead. I‘m concerned she might be able to escape a slip lead. I want a small amount of control if I want to use leash pressure to show her what I want her to do. Otherwise I want it to be as noninvasive as possible. How do I decide...

First, let me apologize in advance to anyone who is grossly offended by Labradors - you can either click the back button now, or pretend she's a blonde GSD with a very short coat and soft ears ?.
Background: I forget which thread it was, but I offered to film a clicker loading session and teach a basic behavior if I was able to locate an appropriate dog at my job. I was fortunate to come across this little girl who had just arrived the evening before, but I was unfortunate in that I set up...

Hello everyone. I apologize if this has been covered somewhere before but I couldn’t find it. I’ll try to make this short. We have two GSDs. One is three, Harper, and Gertie is two. Our goal with all of our dogs to date, and those have included both GSDs and wonderful mutts, is to crate train until they are housebroken then we leave them loose in the house with us. We only put them back in the kennel if we are leaving and there are any we can’t trust not to destroy the house. Iffy ones are...

I am training my 1 and 1/2 year old GSD to be my Service Dog. She is doing good with heeling beside me when we walk. But she is also very excited by the sights and smells around her and it can be to hard get her attention focused on me. We go to the airport to practice. She loves it and she is good when there is a moderate amount of people around. But in walking through crowds she wants to reach out, smell and meet everyone, especially children. I'm constantly pulling her away. Service dogs...

Aloha, all. I would like to find the best way to stop specific bark/aggression in Nimai, perhaps using Hamilton Method
We are on the second floor of my business and in a large upstairs open area (a 2000 square foot patio area). When anyone approaches on the first floor/ground level, Nimai comes totally unglued barking. As soon as that person comes up the stairs Nimai is all calm and loving and wants to play with that person if he recognizes him. This may not be a big deal for...

This thread is not a bashing thread, and if I'm not following the rules I apologize, moderators. I understand that this guy has a history of abuse and breeding problems, and I have no doubt his training matches his record...but I am curious to know what others see right and wrong in this video ..read more

I would be interested to know if anyone has applied the canine emotional detox protocol such as is written about by Diane Garrod. I have a very reactive 20 month old German Shepherd. She seems to have a lot of anxiety/stress, is hyper vigilant, and very reactive to dogs within her critical distance and to be people she is not familiar with in the home. I have read Diane’s book regarding the C.E.D. And am considering giving it a try ..read more
