Key points on the new mandatory standard for toys.
CPR Kids First Aid Blog
by Casey De Farria
1M ago
In September 2023, the ACCC created a new mandatory standard to reduce the chances of small parts releasing or coming off toys during play or after reasonable wear and tear, helping to prevent choking, suffocation, or death. It applies to toys manufactured, designed, labeled, or marketed for children up to and including 36 months. These standards are a reminder of why it is important for well-meaning relatives and friends, to opt for age-appropriate toys when buying gifts. Here are the key takeaways. The new standard is applicable, but not limited, to: rattles, toy dummies, teethers, and ..read more

When your child gets gastro, you may just accept that the entire family is doomed. But there is hope! Cleaning is an important part of fighting the good fight and stopping the spread… but how do you safely dispose of and clean up vomit/faeces? Or clean cloth nappies? What about bedding that is soiled? When somebody has gastro symptoms, particular attention must be paid to cleaning surfaces such as toilet seats and handles, taps, and nappy change tables. To give yourself the best fighting chance, you must ensure that all potentially contaminated areas are regularly cleaned and disinfected using ..read more

Buying/have a baby gate? Here’s something you need to know!

by Casey De Farria

Baby safety gates can be a lifesaver when it comes to adventurous and curious little ones! But did you know? There is currently no Australian standard for baby gates. As there isn’t currently an Australian standard, certification to international standards is a good starting point – there are two international standards for safety gates: the European EN 1930 and the American ASTM F1004. Look for indications either on the packaging, online, or on the product manual that state (for example) ‘This product complies with safety standard EN 1930:2011’ – if you are unsure, always check with the retai ..read more

As paed nurses, we understand – when your little one is in hospital (whether as the result of an emergency or a planned visit) it is easy to get caught up in it all. You might second-guess yourself, feel a little overwhelmed, or just plain confused about what questions you could be asking. We want to preface this with an important point – although these suggestions can help you to feel supported and empowered, our ultimate piece of advice? If there is something you are unsure of at any point, don’t be afraid to SPEAK UP and ask ‘WHY’! For example – say your little one has a cannula in, and a n ..read more

How many of you saw the record-breaking ‘Hercules’, who was handed into the staff at The Australian Reptile Park recently, to join the funnel web spider venom program? Hands up if you knew that some nappy rash creams aren’t able to be used in daycares because they contain almond oil. Turns out that this isn’t just important for little ones with known allergies – did you know that it is not recommended to use products with food ingredients on dry/broken skin, as it can increase the chance of developing an allergy to this food? Casey here – At drop-off last week, I handed one of the teachers a sensitive facial sunscreen as my youngest had been getting a rash from the supplied sunscreen at daycare. She checked the label to make sure it had no allergens in it ..read more

We really don’t want to be the fun police with this one – we promise! Kids LOVE being swung around by their arms, whether in circles or the classic “one, two, three weeeeeeee” with an adult on either side of them. Just be aware of ‘pulled elbow’ – a common injury that can come with doing these. You don’t have to stop the fun, just lift them by their armpits instead! Image credit: RCH Pulled Elbow fact sheet How is it caused?
