Greetings! Black Nonbelievers is proud to celebrate Black History Month in 2023. And we are especially proud of the contributions that Black atheists, freethinkers and humanists have made to our communities and the world. If you would like to learn more about the lives and work of these iconic figures, we highly recommend “Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism” by Christopher Cameron. Also, check out more contemporary Black atheist and humanist activists through the recommended resources on our website. As we mark 12 years in existence, at BN, we will continue upliftin ..read more

Greetings! If it has not been said enough already, Happy New Year! I hope that your 2023 is off to a wonderful start, even as we weave through the tense climate in the world today.  January is a month that is monumental, with the annual celebrations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, and National Religious Freedom Day – both of which occurred on the 16th of this month. Sadly, it should also be the 50th anniversary of Roe. v Wade, which guaranteed reproductive rights. As nonbelievers, we must remain vigilant and be a reminder of what this country’s founding was intended to pro ..read more

Greetings, April has been quite the busy month. In addition to proudly accepting the 2022 Irving and Anabel Wolfson Award (presented by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester), I just returned from the 2022 American Atheists convention held here in Atlanta over Easter weekend. I must tell you that it was a most welcome return to larger in-person events, and it was wonderful to see so many good friends and new faces. And it was also great to see so many BN members in attendance this year; it is a great sign of future engagement to come. However, there was a not so pleasant aspect to th ..read more

What a Privilege and Honor To Work With You

Greetings, I hope your holiday season is going well. On December 5th, five affiliate organizers dissociated from BN. They issued a statement for their reasons that same day. I will disclose that I reacted to a personal matter during this year’s BN SeaCon, and while it was independent of the official events, it did impact some attendees and members of the organizing team. While I acknowledged and accepted my responsibility for said reaction, apologized to individuals that were affected, and made corrective actions before the cruise ended, the decision of the former organizers has been acce ..read more

“Let’s all give thanks, where thanks Is due Not to Religion, not to a God But to the PEOPLE who make the world a better place For ME and YOU” There are some of the lyrics to Dan Barker’s song “Let’s All Give Thanks”, which was performed at the debut of Godless Gospel at the 45th annual convention for the Freedom From Religion Foundation. I have the distinct honor of being a part of this project, which was conceptualized by Dan over 30 years ago, and was given a very soulful life and sound by creative director Andre Forbes.  Godless Gospel is personally important to me because a ..read more

Greetings! On behalf of the organizing team for the Women of Color Beyond Belief conference, I would like to thank everyone who attended (in person and virtually) and supported us. It was an amazing event this year, and we could not have done it without you! We also want to thank everyone who supported Secure the Bag 2. In partnership with GO Humanity, we packed over 6,000 meals for the Greater Chicago Food Depository to distribute to those in need. If you were not able to attend this year, or if you did and missed any of the sessions, the videos will be available on our YouTube channel very s ..read more

Greetings! The 2022 Women of Color Beyond Belief conference is right around the corner, and I hope you are just as excited as we are! Get ready to hear and learn from some amazing women who are doing important work in our communities and beyond. I would also like to thank once again everyone who supported BN in honor of my 46th birthday (September 4th). It was an honor to be tabling and speaking with the Skeptrack at the annual DragonCon event here in Atlanta that Labor Day weekend. We connected with so many attendees who were glad to see us and learn of our community work. Sec ..read more

Greetings! I hope you all had a great summer. Despite the ongoing aftermath of the recent reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision by the United States Supreme Court, and other egregious displays of Christian Nationalism, we are standing strong, making our voices heard, and fighting back. I would like to once again thank everyone who supported our summer fundraising drive in July. Your contributions always go a long way toward continuing our outreach, community building, and liberation work. As we prepare for the fall season, I hope that you will attend and support the Women of Colo ..read more

Juneteenth and Pride IS Black Liberation!

The month of June is very important, as it marks both Juneteenth and Pride. Since our inception in 2011, BN has ALWAYS celebrated and supported our LGBTQ+ members, and as well those who are in our leadership (including yours truly with my pansexual identity). In fact, it is right there in our mission statement. We understand that supporting religious recovery and healing also means supporting those who are struggling with their sexual and gender identities due to religious and societal stigmas. This is also very important to liberation in Black communities, and we stand firm on this. As we pre ..read more

Greetings, Sadly, we have witnessed some very tragic events in May. The horrific attack in Buffalo, NY that left 10 people dead and 3 injured (mostly targeting African Americans) at the hands of alleged shooter Payton Grendon, was yet another in a long line of domestic terrorists who harbor White Supremacist ideologies and a blatant disregard for human life. We are also witnessing the potential overturn of the 1973 landmark Roe vs Wade decision by the United States Supreme Court, which could severely affect reproductive options for many people – particularly black and brown comm ..read more
