Exterior Rot Repair - Northern IL

Hi All - My wife and I moved into a log home a couple of years ago. It’s our first experience with one. Late last year we noticed several logs that either need rot repair, or were poorly repaired in the past and need another round. I purchased materials for some of the easier to access spots, but for more serious issues I’d prefer to find a professional. I’m struggling to track down pros who do this kind of work in the region. Does anybody know a reputable carpenter or log home pro in the area who I can reach out to? submitted by /u/Unlikely_Estate_7489 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I have used Sikkens interior satin alkyd for my cedar logs for 30yrs. But all I can find now are products labeled for exterior, which may not be appropriate for interior work. I tried the water base, it left a terrible finish. Any recommendations? TY submitted by /u/510granle [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

New log home, built in 2022, there is only one “inside” corner in the house. I noticed daylight coming through the joints. What’s the best way to seal this up? Expanding foam? Specific brand recommendations? submitted by /u/AppropriateCry6443 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well. I was hoping to tap some of your wisdom of how to finish these windows that the PO never trimmed or flashed. It appears he just installed the window and only caulked it. I'm having troubles of finding materials of what the next step should be. I do not have any leaks coming inside. Thank you!! https://preview.redd.it/fivk95t7issc1.png?width=1244&format=png&auto=webp&s=c957f880f4bdb342dda194c00c3de8bce0e16faf submitted by /u/Famous-Stick-1948 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Log home restoration

Bought this log home a year ago and need to start working on the outside. I’ve been told to pressure wash the outside and remove the old stain/paint (can’t tell if it’s paint or stain). I pressure washed a small spot yesterday (pictured) and the old stain/paint came off but took a lot of work. I’ve looked into stripit to remove this old stain but not sure what to do. I am wanting to do this myself since I’m 24 and don’t have enough money to have a log home company come out and do it. Any recommendations? submitted by /u/Fragrant_Airline_230 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is this okay? Looking to purchase log home with large cracks?

We are looking to purchase a log home, but are struggling to find answers about these cracks in the logs. It looks to be in fantastic shape (from a layman's perspective). It was built in 2007. I've been told: The logs are hand skewed. They are hemlock. The house was put together in BC then dismantled and reconstructed in Saskatchewan. The structure is referred to as a Scandinavian style of log home. Each log was scribed then cut to fit the log below it. There is insulation between each log. The owner restained the house and garage in 2018. They said they checks for air leaks every winter ..read more

Interior Stain

Okay, so I have sanded most the interior of my log garage. We're going to turn it into a gym. Now we're getting close to the stainvpart. I don't believe it was ever stained prior and was extremely rough. Do I need to log wash? How many coats? Do I need a sealant coat? Any extra information on interior finishing would be great. Thank you. submitted by /u/AEfresh [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

We have this ugly log in our home and I’m not sure what to do to it to make it look better. Part of me wants to just hang a towel rod since it’s in the half bath but I don’t really want towels next to the toilet. submitted by /u/Mrsrightnyc [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
