Help with new home

How do I find out what kind of maintenance my home needs? It’s a 30 year old log cabin. I think the windows leak hot air and the gap between the logs needs chinking (the previous owner did not do that cause they didn’t like the look) , but I don’t want to just pay of things that don’t need to be done. My question boils down to how do I know what’s correct for my home and what’s just wishful thinking. For example, I’m not feeling air coming in from the outside on the windows. I just smell the air. Maybe that’s normal for my old home? Thank you in advance. Edit the lighter wood is the inside th ..read more

Wood Stoves and Wall Protection?

Hi all, What does everybody do to protect their walls behind their wood stove? I was thinking about eventually putting in stone like this picture (not of my cabin) but I'm worried about it holding moisture and rotting the walls. Especially during the shoulder months where there could be humidity but the stove won't be roaring all the time. My cabin is solid wood log kept in the original round log shape. Thoughts? submitted by /u/Sa-bri-el [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

We recently purchased a log home, which we're very excited about, but are trying to get a handle on maintenance. I had two companies come out to quote doing a maintenance coat of Sikkens Log and Siding. One has completely ghosted me after coming out and the other quoted $7,500 which included the stain, washing the cabin, dusting bee holes and applying Bee Gone, and touching up checking where needed. I wanted to get a sense of whether this is a reasonable quote for a 2,000 sq. ft. home. I'm tempted to do the work myself but don't want to get in over my head. Any tips on applying maintenance co ..read more
