We would like to hire a car in Bologna and after spending 10 days in the Tuscan countryside want to drop it off at Rome before spending 4 days in Rome. We will be staying in the Termini area but not sure how easy it is to drive there to drop the car off? Would we be better to drop it off at the FCO Airport and then train into Rome or drop it off at Termini?
Thank you in advance for the advice ..read more

We’ll be in italy for a month and are wondering what everyones doing these days. We have iphone 12s (Verison) and are planning on buying an italian sim once we get there and from time to time put our US sim in the phone to check messages. Does that work these days or do you have a better plan. Last time we were there was 7 years ago. We have wifi where were staying.
Thanks ..read more

Hi! I'm new to this forum and very excited to meet and connect with fellow slow travelers! Thank you in advance for any help and insight!
Later this year, around the September timeframe, I am planning 6 weeks in Italy, with 3 weeks hunkering down in one home, likely in Tuscany (or Umbria). I would appreciate suggestions on liveable cities (that are not necessarily Medieval walled cities), in the region. More requests/requirements detailed below!
Background:
This is my first "real"...

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if anyone's ever mentioned this, but I thought it be worthwhile posting because I found it useful. I had an early flight out of Malpensa yesterday (yah, Pauline - I was in Europe for the last few weeks, running around seeing opera productions - I'm on sabbatical this semester - and ended up in Milan). I didn't have a rental car and sleeping in one of the hotels right next to the airport didn't work since I was going to an opera performance the night before.
I had...

From time to time, I read inquiries from tourists about the advisability of purchasing one of Trenitalia's train passes, rather than individual tickets.
Are these passes cost-efficient?
As regards the fast reserved trains (Freccia and Intercity), the answer is usually NO, because often you can find lower fares by purchasing well in advance and selecting the Trenitalia "Frecciadays" or "Super Economy" fare (or some other deeply discounted fare). You can also purchase the partial refund...

Hi all,
I wanted to get some opinions on a couple of options of what to do at the end of our trip in the Veneto area. The basics:
Who's going - me, my partner, and our 9 year old daughter (who currently has poor walking stamina - but new puppy will hopefully help that!) Oh, and she also has inattentive ADHD, so I expect the usual kid boredom seen on trips x2 from her!
Coming in early-ish September to Rome, checking that out and then heading down to see Pompeii (maybe Herculaneum?) ~ 5...
