It's decsion time for me this week, on whether I go ahead and have spinal surgey performed on my dog (gsd), or decide to let him go. He's not that good on pain meds but he's worse without them, it's an op to permanently stabilise his pelvis and to relieve pressure on the nerve root ends which are responsible for the pain. Does anyone here have any experience to share ..read more

Boarder Collie hit by Car

I have a 2 year old female boarder collie that got hit by a speeding car a few hours ago. She seems fine except for a cut on her back leg. I am in Ireland so its late here now. We called the vet and she asked us a few questions about the dogs injury but said she will see here 9am in the morning several hours from now. This is often the case with my vet even though she has an emergency number and does house calls. I have not been to another vet in years so I don't know if this is the case... Freeze-dried food conversion

I just bought a bunch of freeze-dried disks of food from Oma's Pride. I was hoping to use them on USAR deployments and long-term training exercises where it would be impossible for me to bring my dog's usual raw diet. Problem is, I have no idea how much of this freeze-dried stuff to feed my dog. He currently eats around 1.25 to 1.5 lbs. of food (raw) per day. Anybody ever use this type of stuff before ..read more

I was recently told this was available in Canada. Anyone use this to preclude heat cycles. Dr. Hutchinson has long been a proponent of its use. I wonder about any side effects, etc. Anyone have experience with it? T ..read more

Lap spay vs OSS

Hi everyone, My PP dog is 4 in July and was intended to be my foundation bitch but she got Pannus and has been washed. Now I’m left with the decision to do a lap spay (ovary removal via keyhole, uterus intact) vs an ovary sparing spay (one ovary remaining, cervix & uterus removed). One vet recommends one and of course the other one thinks and OSS would suit her better. She is apparently suitable to trial according to my trainer. They recommended against spaying her incase it affects her... Lap spay vs OSS ..read more

My 10.5y female GSD was just diagnosed with Degenerataive Myelopathy. I have been reading quite a bit on it, but most of what's out there is the same basic medical information. What I can't find is personal experiences. If you have dealt with this, what is the progression of the disease, time frame, what helps and what doesn't etc. I would appreciate any in put. I am much more concerned with quality, not quantity of time right now ..read more

Itchy Bitch

I have a 3 yo Malinois bitch who has had itchy skin since we picked her up from the breeder. It got so bad she was biting through her skin. I have tried supplements, shots, shampoos, acupuncture, novel proteins (we feed raw). The only thing that continues to work is Apoquel. I have tried to cut the Apoquel back to ½ a pill a day, as per vet, and while it works for a while, it stops being as effective over time. ½ a pill doesn't seem to be a long term answer. The vet has no idea. I'm open... Itchy Bitch ..read more

Cruciate Injuries

I'm curious what the experiences are from people on the forum with cruciate injuries. Surgery, non-surgery, what sort of recovery did the dog have, was it able to go back to work, any future injuries, etc. One of my dogs has a cruciate injury and after a month of crate rest I'm at the point where I'm trying to decide if I should continue with the crate rest, or consider TPLO surgery. The specialist says surgery will bring the dog back to 100%, my very limited experience says "probably... Cruciate Injuries ..read more

Well I did not see a thread for this particular topic so I thought we could start discussion here. I recently learned about "hemp" aka federally legal cannabis and it blew my mind. Taken from the FAQ of the website I purchased it from (starseedbotanicals): We sell Industrial Hemp and other botanicals. According to 7 U.S.C. §5940, the term “industrial hemp” means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9... CBD treats for dogs?

Curious if anyone has experience with CBD-infused treats for dogs? Does it seem to help with anxiety? When it storms here in San Diego, my dog hyperventilates and gets pretty anxious. I usually have to resort to using 0.5 mg Xanax which helps a lot. I'd like a natural alternative and thought I'd give CBD a shot ..read more
