USAS-12 at the Range (w/ the Fun Switch)

https://forgottenweapons.vhx.tv/videos/usas-12-at-the-range-w-the-fun-switch The USAS-12, made by Daewoo in South Korea, is one of the better box-fed shotguns available (I use that term loosely; there are not that many of them around). It was available as both a semiauto and a fully automatic model – although the semiautos were arbitrarily defined as Destructive Devices in 1994, and must now be registered as such. The fully automatic ones were already registered and were not impacted by that rule. While I have shot a semiauto USAS-12 before, I’ve not had the chance to try the full auto one…unt ..read more

Croatian Improvised Weapons: From Obrez to Single-Shot Yugo M70 Hybrid
Forgotten Weapons » Shotgun

https://youtu.be/zoRFnt0HZiA During the Croatian Homeland War – as in all wars of independence – a wide variety of cobbled-together firearms were used by people who could not access proper factory arms for one reason or another. Today I’m as the Sisal Municipal Museum looking at four different examples from specifically the Sisal area in Croatia. Two are 16ga shotguns (16ga was more common there than the 12ga we are used to in the US), one is a classic Enfield “Obrez”, and one is a neat hybrid of a Yugoslav M70 AK onto a single shot break action frame. Thanks to the Sisak Municipal Museum for ..read more

Peak American: the Winchester 1897 Trench Gun in WW1
Forgotten Weapons » Shotgun

The United States was the only country to use shotguns in World War One in a substantial way. It was not the first time the US had used such guns either; shotguns were used in the Philippines against the Moros and on the Mexican Punitive Expedition. For use in the Great War, however, it was deemed necessary to fit bayonets to them. At the request of the War Department, the Winchester company designed a bayonet mounting adapter for their Model 1897 pump-action shotgun, to use the M1917 bayonet that Winchester was also making at the time for the war effort. Guns were first deployed to France in ..read more

Ye Olde Tactical: A Vintage Riot Shotgun w/ Nydar 47 Optic
Forgotten Weapons » Shotgun
by Ian McCollum

All that is tactical is not necessarily new…and this shotgun is a perfect example. It was put together by a Tucson police officer in the late 1940s or early 1950s, and has all the elements of a very modern “tactical” combat shotgun. It is a Remington Model 11 semiauto shotgun (a licensed copy of the Browning Auto-5). It is fitted with a Parsons 2-round magazine extension (for a total of 7+1 capacity), a barrel from a Remington 11R (20″ cylinder choke) and a Nydar Model 47 reflex sight. That Nydar sight is a really cool example of an early optical sight, developed form aircraft gunnery sights ..read more

Cosmi: A Boutique 8-Round Selfloader Hiding in a Single-Shot Body
Forgotten Weapons » Shotgun
by Ian McCollum

The Cosmi is a very high-end boutique Italian sporting shotgun. It has all the looks and lines of a single shot break-action gun, but hiding inside is a long recoil self-loading action and 8-round magazine tube. The video I have today is really only half a video – I filmed this footage back in the summer of 2015, anticipating that we would pair it with some footage at the range using the gun. However, when we got out there, we realized that we had the wrong recoil spring for the ammunition on hand, and the gun wouldn’t cycle reliably. I have not had another opportunity to film a Cosmi since ..read more
