So I got this old gun years ago called the Springfield 511. It’s a boxlock, double barrel shotgun that features nice long barrels and the wooden furniture you’d expect from a classic side-by-side. Little did I know that the Springfield 511 had a rather convoluted past that ties back to both the Stevens and Savage companies. Today we’ll explore the Springfield 511 and, by extension, an entire line of shotguns by Savage.  The twice barrel is always terrifying. My Springfield 511  There is something so cool about side-by-side shotguns. Years ago, I was a broke Marine, and somehow I stum ..read more

A day at the range with shotguns is always a good day. Just throwing lead downrange can be fun, but sometimes you want to actually train and learn a thing or two. This is why I seek out the various police and military quals across the country to try my skills against some professional standards. Today I am trying my hand at the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement shotgun qualification. For short, let’s just call it the TCOLE shotgun qual. Grab your scattergun and a fistful of ammo, and get to the range! TCOLE Shotgun Qual — What You’ll Need Prospective shotgunners will need 10 rounds, broken ..read more

Have you ever wondered how a laser would work out on your shotgun, or if it would even be a good idea? You’re in luck! Iraqveteran8888 (I’ll call him Iraq Veteran) shows us the joys of a laser mounted on a shotgun in the video below. Specifically, he’s using the Crimson Trace LS 250 mounted on a Mossberg 590A1 SBS. This shotgun, in particular, is pretty impressive. It has a 14-inch barrel and is in law enforcement configuration. Note that acquiring a shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18 inches requires approval from the BATFE by filling out special forms, paying a $200 tax, and possib ..read more

Owning a Winchester 1897 isn’t a cheap or easy venture. Owning a solid, shootable variant of an OG 1897 in the configuration I want just isn’t going to happen. I’ve been waiting on Cimmarron to finish their new Trench Gun variant of the Winchester 1897, but that still seems like it is fairly far out. So when I saw a Norinco 1897 trench gun for sale, I scooped it up about as fast as possible. For a long time, those of us searching for a Winchester 1897 in an affordable configuration that’s completely shootable were satisfied by Norinco. However, even those imports have dried up, and companies ..read more

I love the old Browning Humpback. It was on these old autoloaders that I learned how to shoot, how to hunt, and how to respect a firearm. I spent a lot of time in the woods with my grandfather and each of us had one in our hands. He is gone now, and I have his old Browning Auto-5s and Remington Model 11s. I still take them out into the field from time to time and of course enjoy a fine cigar after and reflect on the day’s hunt and memories of hunts past. So let’s look a little at the history of this classic John Browning design and work through why we’ll choose an Ashton VSG to go with it. Br ..read more

Some articles are just a pleasure to write, from start to finish. This is one of those. I had never heard of this reviewer before, and I don’t do a lot of shotgunning, but both of those are changing. The reviewer, Paul from SuperSetCA, seems knowledgeable, the video is interesting, and the production value is top-notch. It also helps that we get a lot of footage of championship shooter Jessica Hook behind the guns, so seeing how they handle (or how they’re supposed to be handled) is easy.  Championship Shooter Jessica Hook. Plus, it just looked like a helluva lot of fun. Especially that ..read more
