Fighting the bear for your children

The “principalities and powers of darkness” are discipling your children. We are witnessing an attack on children unlike we have seen in our lifetime. Since Adam and Eve feared Cane and Abel’s bickering would lead to bigger trouble, parents have worried about their kids. Concern for children is well-founded. The world has always been dangerous for children. When Moses was born Pharoah ordered that Hebrew baby boys be killed as a means of population control. In our day the number one cause of death worldwide is abortion of preborn babies, making the mother’s womb the most dangerous place for a ..read more

The Northwest region of the United States is one of the world’s great mission fields. With weekly church attendance of four percent, the Northwest approximates China in percentage of weekly worshipers. Northwest corporations like Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, Nike, Intel and Starbucks have changed the world. With over 100 university and college campuses, students from dozens of nations are educated in the Northwest. Reaching the Northwest with the good news of Jesus Christ has worldwide impact! While a great mission field, God is at work in the Northwest. On June 15, four Northwest Baptists were ..read more

It’s Time the SBC Faced Reality

Will God bless Southern Baptists and grow His work through us? Southern Baptists will descend on Nashville in large numbers next week because they are rightly concerned about the health and direction of our missionary system. The concern is expressed differently depending on who is talking, but all know God’s mission through Southern Baptists is at stake. Between 2007-2019 the SBC suffered a net loss of 5,258 churches supporting Cooperative Program missions, totalling a decline of $85,000,000, not counting inflation. This has many asking the question, Will God entrust to Southern Baptists the ..read more

Make room for widows at the sbc

Are widows welcome to attend the annual meeting of the SBC? Of course. That is, if they have the coins to do so. In the Story of the Widow’s Mite Jesus opened a window into the heart of those giving offerings at the Temple, forever correcting the false idea that the person who gives the biggest offering is the most generous, or the most godly, among the worshippers. “No,” says Jesus, “The widow who gives her last coin has the most generous heart. She gave out of her poverty putting in all she had” (paraphrase of Luke 21:1-4). The SBC needs more widows, and other generous, big-hearted, Jesus-l ..read more

On Dec. 7, 1941 Winston Churchill was at Chequers, his weekend retreat, with the U.S Ambassador to Great Britain and many top military officers. For almost two years Britain had held out against Nazi Germany’s efforts to bomb them to oblivion and force a surrender. At some point that evening they turned on the radio to listen to the latest news from the BBC. What they heard was both terrible and wonderful for Churchill. Pearl Harbor had been bombed by the Japanese. That terrible news caused Churchill to brighten. He was careful not to show elation to his American guest. But the reason for his ..read more

Why I’m a Southern Baptist

As a candidate for president of the Southern Baptist Convention, it’s important that you know why I’m a Southern Baptist (SB). The short version is that I’m an SB because of their love for Jesus and their missionary commitment to preach Jesus and reach people throughout the United States and to all the nations on earth. I became an SB in Butte, Montana over 40 years ago. I was a petroleum engineering student, preparing for what I thought would be my life’s work. That changed because of the one and only Bible-teaching Christian group on campus, the Baptist Student Union (BSU). Through BSU I lea ..read more

Reform Trustee Training in the SBC

To help trustees avoid pitfalls and perform at a high level in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), we need to reform our current system. An independent trustee training system is an essential reform. Trustee boards elected by messengers at the Annual Meeting of the SBC each year govern the twelve entities of the SBC. The entities include the SBC Executive Committee, International Mission Board, North American Mission Board, GuideStone Financial Resources, LifeWay Christian Resources, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and six seminaries. These governing Boards have enormous responsibi ..read more

Gratitude is solid ground for building trust, moving forward together

As I prepare to travel to Anaheim for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), I do so with gratitude that I serve in the Northwest. Northwest Baptists understand that the church is God’s plan to make disciples of all nations and that networks of churches, like the NWBC or the national SBC, only exist if local churches believe that investing mission dollars through them is a good investment. When we invest money in a company’s stock, we do so believing that company will provide a reasonable return on our investment. That is one way to look at the mission dollars that your ..read more

Kingdom advance in the northwest

How does God advance His Kingdom upon the earth? A short answer is that God calls missionaries from among His people, equips them by His Spirit, and sends them out from one of His churches. The missionary is sent to preach the gospel, gather those who believe, and form a church(es). This pattern is clear in the Book of Acts where the Holy Spirit led the church in Antioch to “set apart” Paul and Barnabas and send them out to do the work that God had called them to do (Acts 13:2f). The remainder of Acts shows Paul being led by the Holy Spirit to certain places and peoples, where he preached Jes ..read more
