Recognizing Your Hunger Signals

As innate as something like our hunger signals are, many people have lost touch with how to recognize and understand them. But I mean, when magazines touting fad diets that are advising to drink a litre of water before a meal, chew gum or sip on a diet coke to stave off hunger, it's to no surprise why people have lost touch with their hunger signals. By the way, as a health professional, I highly advise against all of these things unless you want diluted stomach acid that will interfere with digestion, cause bloating and even more cravings from aspartame-filled gum! Just saying ;) This is one ..read more

5 Reasons You Might Be Emotional Eating

When I first started shifting my Holistic Nutrition practice towards helping women heal from their disordered & emotional eating and making that more well known on Instagram (where you can usually find me cooking, dancing while cooking or dancing while cooking with my cat, Duncan), I couldn't believe the outpouring of messages I received from women who had previously suffered or were currently suffering. During my "10 year career" with disordered eating, I didn't really have a "label" for what I was experiencing. I just thought it was normal to restrict myself from eating certain foods an ..read more

3 Simple Ways You Can Stop Feeling Out Of Control Around Food

I hear it from clients all the time: "I just wish I could stop obsessing over food" "I think about food 24/7" "I wish I could stop feeling crazy around food" "I'm constantly thinking about what my next meal or snack is" I know how frustrating it is because this was part of my story too. During my "10 year career" in disordered eating, I was absolutely obsessed with food. It got to the point where I only looked forward to hanging out with people if there was going to be food involved (which is the complete opposite to when I was suffering from Anorexia and would skip out on soci ..read more

What I've Learned In My First Year As A Holistic Nutritionist

A Facebook memory popped up for me today reminding me that I finished my last class at The Institute Of Holistic Nutrition and started working at a natural health clinic a year ago this week! It's really refreshing to see these kinds of memories popping up now, opposed to the ones from me in university doing a keg stand or getting "iced" (ha!). I can hardly believe it's been a year since I finished school and yet, so many changes have happened and new learnings have come about as to what "holistic nutrition" is all about and what it means to be healthy (in my eyes). If you've been following m ..read more

I shared a picture of this super yummy recipe on Instagram last week and based on the string of comments that came in, it sounded like the recipe for this Thai Noodle Salad was one hot commodity! I have to say though, when I was shooting the photos for this blog post, I thought to myself "How many more Thai-inspired dishes can I put on my blog? / Haven't I already created this recipe?" There are so many more recipes I still have and want to create for you, and yet somehow I justified to bring you a Sweet Potato Pad Thai,Spaghetti Squash Pad Thai and now a Thai Noodle Salad – ha!I 'm sure yo ..read more

Why Diets Don't Work

"If all it took was a good 'sensible' calorie-restricted meal plan to lose weight, we'd be a nation of thin people"- Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch At the beginning of my 1:1 nutrition or emotional eating consultations, I typically like to explain my approach as each practitioner is different and I like to give my client an idea of what they're in for. Usually, when I tell them I'm anti-dieting, I get some funny looks. I mean, what kind of holistic nutritionist doesn't prescribe a specific diet to their client? When people speak of dieting, we are typically referring to weight loss, but the ..read more

Pizza Salad

This is definitely one of the “weirder” recipes I’ve posted on my website (and no, I didn’t forget the word “and” between “Pizza Salad” – this is literally pizza in salad form. I was inspired to recreate a healthified version of this Pizza Salad after attending a family get together where we ordered the "Abruzzo Special Salad" from a place called Abruzzo Pizza. I don’t know about you, but I’m a salad lover and not just because they might be seen as being healthier, “low carb” or associated with weight loss – none of that. I see salads as super refreshing, exciting in every bite and filling ..read more

What Your Cravings Mean and How To Manage Them
Rachel Molenda Blog » Emotional Eating

Cravings. One of the most loved and hated words in history of mankind. So maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but it happened to be the only way I could describe the rollercoaster of emotions that come alongside cravings. Cravings aren't just simply a yearning for a certain food – they are deeply embedded and born out of emotions; our wants, needs, sadness, pain, love, grief and happiness. The nutritionist in me also recognizes that cravings can be born out of nutritional deficiencies, which I'm going to touch upon shortly. But I would say, it takes an equal effort of healing emotionally ..read more
