Today the global community must rally together to refocus on ensuring Ukraine can be supported not just by arms to fight the war against Russia, but through prioritising infrastructure to ensure the country can be rebuilt for the future. Without the collective support of the global community, Ukraine faces the perilous risk of permanent fracture. Such an outcome not only poses an existential threat to Europe’s security and democracy but risks the potential creation of a new division akin to a modern Berlin Wall. Our responsibility to our European neighbours demands that we take every measure p ..read more

2023 was a challenging year for the world - war, refugee crises, economic downturn, disease.
We are dealing with many human crises across the world including in Afghanistan, Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza. These are all examples of where the global community needs to come together and take action.
As we enter 2024 I outline below four key areas where we need to keep focus and ensure we come together as governments and humanitarian organisations to tackle the issues quickly and effectively to ensure the human cost can be stopped quickly.
1. Ukraine must not slip off the agenda

The 2023 edition of the global Women Peace and Security Index (WPS Index) scores and ranks 177 countries in terms of women’s inclusion, justice, and security.
No country performs perfectly on the WPS Index and the results reveal wide disparities across countries, regions, and indicators. The WPS Index offers a tool for identifying where resources and accountability are needed most to advance women’s status - which benefits us all.
The WPS Index is published by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security with support from the Norwegia ..read more

A blog post from The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
Georgetown Ambassadors for Women, Peace and Security traveled to Jordan this June to learn more about peace and security in the Middle East and the role of women, and to explore future initiatives in the region. Our delegation of 25 women, led by Ambassador Melanne Verveer, was received with legendary Jordanian hospitality and candid conversations about women’s leadership in this strategic country, the obstacles women continue to face, and successful programs to promote peacebuilding and economic opportunity.

As we mark International Women’s Day 2023 I recognise how fortunate I have been in benefiting from women’s campaigns over the years for equality. It has allowed us to rise in our careers and realise our full potential. Of course, at times we have had to deal with the extreme misogynists. But the key to the future is to ensure that women globally are able to be educated, and accepted at every level.
The most significant inequality that I have witnessed is the challenges faced by women and girls in other parts of the world such as Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria; where women face gender-based vi ..read more

I was pleased to host my latest virtual blog breakfast with Stephenie Foster on 'Building Back Better: The Role of Women in the Recovery'.
It was an opportunity to bring together people, from business, government and NGOs to discuss the vital role women have to play in the road to recovery after the pandemic. We met at a challenging moment when the USA has been experiencing a surge in hate crime, specifically targeting Asian-Americans. We asked our friends and colleagues Cindy Chin and Wenchi Yu to share their personal perspectives and experiences with the group. This was a critical moment fo ..read more

The COVID19 lockdown has shone an important light on the continued outrageous working conditions in the garment trade across the world. Even in the United Kingdom we have seen that there is consistent disregard for employment regulation and human rights.
It is critical that we put pressure on companies and governments to uphold strict policies when it comes to the garment trade, as the demand for low cost clothes comes at an incredible social, human and environmental cost. Although we are more aware than ever, unfortunately with the current economic downturn and intense pressure o ..read more

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights”.
It is not just about talking about plans and goals, but making sure real change occurs. This is a key time to look ahead and consider how to engage women from across generations.
The last decade saw women rise up, use their voices and create real change. Whether it was through the #MeToo movement, in Greta Thunberg’s global climate change campaign or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest ever women being voted into the United States Senate.
International Women’s Day comes at a turbulent time ..read more

A blog post from The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
The leader of Belarus’ democratic movement, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, received the 2022 International Trailblazer Award from Georgetown University’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security for her courageous opposition to an authoritarian regime. She accepted the award “on behalf of all brave women of Belarus.” This is an excerpt from her conversation with Ambassador Melanne Verveer.
What motivated you to run for president of Belarus against all odds?
Sviatlana: My husband was also an ordinary person, and we had ne ..read more

A blog post from The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
The Georgetown Ambassadors for Women, Peace and Security recently traveled to Northern Ireland and Ireland to gain a firsthand understanding of the challenges to the Good Friday Peace Agreement posed by recent political developments.
These troubling developments—negotiations over the Brexit withdrawal, a stalled Assembly, and a new Legacy Bill—underscore the unfinished nature of Northern Ireland’s peace process. The underlying tensions have led to a political stalemate, despite the majority of political parties declaring ..read more
