Is your hair brassy? Or is it burnt?

A few years ago I commented to my hairstylist that my blonde seemed to be turning brassy and dull faster than usual. “Well, it almost looks like it’s burnt,” he said. And it was like a lightbulb went off in my head. It did look burnt. And it made sense that despite using treatments and products at home to keep my blonde pure and toned, it was still looking a tiny bit orange. I got serious about scaling back on the amount of heat I was using, which was already on the lower end of the spectrum but my fragile hair was proving to not be able to handle it well. The right combination of lower heat ..read more

My Shoulder-Grazing Bob Haircut

Without a doubt, this is my personal favorite length of hair. It’s quick and easy to style, I have options of different things I can do with it, and I love the look of a shoulder-grazing bob on me. It’s cut on a gradual, slight angle getting a little longer towards the face. There is very minimal layering and a barely-there face frame as well. The post My Shoulder-Grazing Bob Haircut first appeared on The Small Things Blog ..read more

Pre-Shampoo Treatment or Deep Conditioner: Which is better?
The Small Things Blog » Hair

There’s a whole world of haircare products dedicated to conditioning your hair, and it seems like that category has grown dramatically in the last few years. Between bond repair products, pre-shampoo oils, and more, everyone can find a product that works for your hair! I alternate between using pre-shampoo oils and deep conditioners, but have you ever wondered which one would be better for you? Deep Conditioners pros: easy to use, is applied to freshly shampooed clean hair to maximize product penetration, usually applied in the shower or at a shampoo bowl in the salon so the heat/steam from t ..read more

If your goal is to restore health back into your hair this year, check out these recommendations for the best softening, hydrating, healing, and protecting treatments! Karité Nutri Intense Nourishing Oil – This is a pre-shampoo treatment! You MUST wash it out. You can spray it on about 10 minutes prior to washing, or leave it on much longer if you so desire. It is, hands down, the most dramatic softening treatment I’ve ever done. Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Deep-Conditioning Hair Mask – It’s a fantastic deep conditioner that offers so many benefits to the hair. My hair feels so soft ..read more

3 Easy Things to Start Doing TODAY for Great Hair

These are 3 simple and easy things to do to give yourself your best hair ever this year! Brush it out before you wash it! Wet hair is more elastic than dry hair, so if you wait to comb it out when it’s wet, you could be snapping and stretching out your hair in a way that could cause damage. Brushing out your hair before you wash it not only smoothes out your hair, but it helps loosen up any build-up or dry skin too! *if your hair is very curly, this isn’t always recommended. I’m not a curly hair expert so I’d recommend asking your stylist how to best prep curly hair for washing! Instead of t ..read more

What treatment does my hair actually *need*?

Between all the deep conditioners, treatments, bond repair, hydration, protein infusion, etc. it can be hard to know exactly what is best for your hair. The first thing you need to do is discuss this with your hairstylist. Ask him or her what they think since they likely know your hair and what your styling process looks like. They also can visually assess your hair and get a feel of what it may need by touching it. If you either don’t have a stylist, or you’re in a pinch and need to figure out how to solve a hair problem on your own, hopefully, this post will give you a bit of direction. Fir ..read more

F.A.Q. // “Do I need to wash my hair before my hair appointment?”
The Small Things Blog » Hair

Social Squares I recently had an appointment to have my hair colored and shared that I used a purifying shampoo the morning of my appointment. I received so many questions about why I did that in my DM’s on Instagram that I decided to break it all down here. “I thought oily hair made the color stick better?” “My stylist always told me dirty hair was better for coloring?” “Why would you wash it if it’s just going to get washed at the salon?” Before I dive in, I feel like I need to remind you that you need to listen to your own stylist if he or she directs you otherwise. I am a professional wi ..read more

We’ve reached the point of the summer where foundation just feels like too much. Frankly, the heat and humidity are oppressive. And I’m a foundation *lover* so this means I need to find a way to feel confident about my makeup without using a heavy base. I’ve discovered a flawless combination of products that makes my skin look sun-kissed and healthy, and I don’t have to worry about sweating it off! I found all of these at Sephora, my go-to beauty store, and I’ll walk you through why I love them below! Before I started my makeup, I put a few bends in my hair with a flat iron. I didn’t want to ..read more

Sun Protection for your Hair

I feel like everyone knows by now how important SPF is for our skin, but I’m not so sure the same sun protection measures are being taken on our hair! Sun, pollution, humidity, salt water, chlorine, and anything else that comes with summertime activities, can all be rough on hair. I have to be extremely mindful of how I care for my hair in the summertime because I have a lot working against me. I heat style regularly, I wash often, I color my hair, I have well water, and we have a pool in the backyard. So if I don’t baby my hair in the summertime (frankly, year-round), it’ll simply break off ..read more
