‘Love you to the moon and back’: Moongate wedding inspiration

Perhaps one of my favourite floral features to design is the moongate. The idea of the moongate originates from China and it is believed that it brings good fortune…. and doesn’t everyone want that on their wedding day!  Part of the appeal of the moongate (other than its striking beauty of course) is its versatility. You can choose from an array of flowers, foliage and colours and the feature will still make an impact on your wedding venue.  The circular shape of the moongate draws the wedding guests’ attention to the focal point of the wedding, the bride and groom, while softening t ..read more

As I have mentioned in my previous blogs wedding planning can be a lengthy (but exciting) process. When it comes to choosing your wedding flowers, they should complement your style and enhance the atmosphere of your ceremony. While it might not be an easy decision (to begin with) there should be a sense of effortlessness blossoming from your wedding flowers (excuse the pun!). Allow me to demonstrate this with a recent wedding at Brooklodge. The bride and groom  opted for an outdoor wedding by the beautiful brooke. As pictured below, the deconstructed arch adorned with white roses and baby ..read more

Wedding Flowers from a distance: A September Wedding in Kilruddery planned over lockdown

As we are all aware, wedding planning can be a complicated process (keeping in mind the fruitful results! ) However, this was even more so the case during lockdown. Fortunately, in terms of wedding flowers, with the right attitude and communication- anything is possible!  This was the case for Kaitlyn and Nick, a couple from Chicago who planned their beautiful wedding at Kilruddery during lockdown. Luckily for me, Kaitlyn was keen to have lots of variety in her bridal bouquet and was very understanding that peonies (her favourite flower) were out of season for September! This allowed room ..read more

Home is where the heart is: Wedding Party inspiration made with Wicklow flowers

Picture this. A mid-August wedding. The sun is beaming. The atmosphere relaxed as we relish the last of the Irish summer. If one was looking for the perfect wedding flowers to encapsulate this energy, I would definitely use this Brooklodge wedding as an example.  Incorporating a variety of colours and flowers (see cover image) the bridal party flowers give a more wild appearance, as if romantically plucked from a meadow pre-vows. This idea is particularly effective as the flowers are locally grown. This is both sustainable and in keeping with the wildflower effect. Of course, we must ment ..read more

January blues… a time for wedding inspiration!

It has been, in a word (or two) absolutely freezing the past couple of weeks. The roads are icing over, the air is biting cold and the days are dark and dreary. Quite a contrast to the wedding buzz one might hope to have in the New year. However, there is something quite beautiful about the touches of frost on the grass, the snow speckled mountains and cool toned silvery skies. Perhaps, amongst these delicate aspects of winters, lies some wedding inspiration… Take the wedding bouquet above for example, despite its cool tones it is striking as different textures and colours are in harmony with ..read more

Going Green

Hello! I wanted to touch briefly on the impact of foliage, be it in your bridal bouquet or in your centre-piece, it plays a key role in the look you would like to achieve with your flowers. Foliage can indeed elevate the focal points of a bouquet or an installation as it adds different textures and a green “backdrop” to make your flowers pop. However, the use of foliage alone can also have a striking effect as it creates a more natural and romantic atmosphere. I recently did a wedding at Rathsallagh House (see below) in which the centre-pieces were mostly comprised  of eucalyptus and pamp ..read more

Flower for Thought: Flowers and Mental Health

Hello there! In honour of World Mental Health day (Sunday October 2021), I wanted to touch briefly on the positive impacts that flowers can have on one’s mood and in turn, one’s mental health. There is a reason why flowers are one of the principle focus points when planning a wedding- they are visually appealing and serve as an enhancement of the joy that is felt on such a special day. The same concept applies to  day-to-day life, a pop of colour in the corner of a room will guarantee an elevated mood. Furthermore, if the flower is scented that provides another stimulus in terms of boosti ..read more

Flower Crown Focus: Tinakilly House Wedding

In this blog, I would like to particularly focus on the use of the flower crown in a wedding. I did a wedding at Tinakilly House, Co. Wicklow and Darek Novak‘s photography, seen in cover image and below, capture the fairytalesque atmosphere of the occasion. The flower crown is a versatile accessory as it can be as simple or as extravagant as your heart desires. If you take a look at the cover photo, you can see that the crown adds a pop of colour to the bridal gown, adding some vibrancy to an already elegant outfit. Through use of different textures, we avoid the “blockiness” of a headpiece on ..read more

Wedding Planning: Where do I start?

As a floral designer, much of my work revolves around organizing my time efficiently to produce high quality results. Wedding planning can seem overwhelming but similarly to how I prep my flowers, it is simply a matter of organization. Everyone’s approach is different. Perhaps you take the old-school approach, pen and paper, brainstorm and maybe even some sketches. If you are more tech-savvy, you might be more suited to an app like Pinterest in which you can gather pictures and categorize them in terms of themes, elements etc. Social media, while it is a vice, allows you to gain inspiration fr ..read more
