Grant Dalton, chief executive of the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona next year, has admitted Saudi Arabia is in the running to host the 2028 edition of sport’s oldest international trophy after a “hugely successful” regatta in Jeddah over the last three days. In an exclusive interview with Telegraph Sport, Dalton dismissed concerns about ‘sportswashing’, saying the Saudis were excellent hosts and partners. Saudi Arabia has been on a sporting land grab over the last few years, bringing top level football, boxing, golf, tennis and Formula One to the Kingdom as part of a long-term strategy. The America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta Jeddah finished as it started, with Team New Zealand dominating the 6-boat field, consistently showing how their additional experience in the AC40 translates to better performance on the race course. After American Magic tragically stumbled on the first day of racing, they matched the scores with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team for the next two days, but it was the Italians that advanced to the Match Race Final, though issues with their boat’s electronics due to the heat plagued their effort. - Full report ..read more

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (December 1, 2023) – The second day of the America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta Jeddah was much improved, stepping up from the minimum wind limit racing of yesterday to a 12-16 knot north westerly that saw the AC40s easily ripping along for three more races. High speed crossings is the theme for six boat fleet races, and it was the Kiwis and Italians that dominated the day. However, after the Americans laid a massive egg on the opener, they were the third best team today. “I felt like we got better as the day went on, we picked up a few things moding wise from the other teams ..read more

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (November 30, 2023) - The gathering of members at New York Yacht Club to watch the America's Cup Preliminary Regatta sat in silence. It was unimaginable that their American Magic team, after winning the previous event, could have failed any worse on the first day of competition. OCS in all three races, and breaking other rules for the umpires to halt their start for two of them. They finished one race... in last. Shocker! But then a giggle emanated from a corner of the room, gaining strength as more got the joke. - Full report ..read more

The choice of Jeddah for the America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta on November 30-December 2 has been a conflict of interests. For an event seeking to be a leader in sustainability, it throws a massive carbon footprint requiring the six teams travel to Saudi Arabia, a country famous for oil. For an event eager to expand its audience, no America’s Cup venue has been so criticized for its oppressive policies. Cup legend Dennis Conner famously said “Bet on self-interest – It’s always running” and the New Zealand defender, which has pleaded poverty since winning in 2021, will receive a king’s ransom f ..read more

Magnus Wheatley, who likes the sound of his written word, and is paid by the ACE (America’s Cup Event) Barcelona to write them, offers observations in advance of the second AC37 Preliminary Regatta on November 30-December 2: Jeddah is the gateway to the Holiest City in Islam, Mecca, which lies some 70 kilometres inland and, as such, it is one of the most religious places on earth. For international travelers, arriving into the hyper-efficiency of the King Abdulaziz International Airport is to step into serenity, reverence, and a white-marbled exquisitely ornate, tradition-infused beauty, befit ..read more

As the six entrants for the 37th America’s Cup prepare to compete in a Preliminary Regatta on November 30-December 2 in Jeddah, reports are circulating of private security companies being secured to ensure the team’s safety in Saudi Arabia. For the USA team, any concern would be warranted as their government has issued a travel warning due to the threat of missile and drone attacks on civilian facilities in the region. But threats come in all sizes, which a 189m vehicle carrier learned on November 19. About 500 miles to the south of Jeddah, the Bahamian flagged M/V GALAXY LEADER was hijacked i ..read more
