Sailing Hall of Famer Buddy Melges is famous for saying how “instruments are great, but you have to look at the water and present the boat to Mother Nature." While it is computers that have created the latest batch of America's Cup AC75s, Mother Nature will get the final vote on which team got it right. Here's a glimpse of what she'll be seeing: With four teams revealing their box-fresh AC75s, it’s abundantly clear that different solutions have been found for very similar questions. The design teams have worked feverishly to deliver their best and latest thinking whilst the electronics and mec ..read more

Each of the six America's Cup teams have mapped out their training schedule, and for NYYC American Magic this was the final day of their two-boat race training program. Their AC40s will now move to Badalona where the Youth & Women’s teams will be based going forward. Out on the water, the team had a high intensity training day full of very close races, interesting pre-start tactics including the displacement wait until about a minute before the start when both boats pop onto the foils and then fight like banshees for position. “We’ve had a really productive two months," noted Terry Hutchin ..read more

The fastest boat always wins the America’s Cup, and with the AC75 Class Rule still in its infancy, the design teams are still navigating how best to exploit the measurement opportunities. With their boat completed, here are comments from the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team: Marcelino Botin, Principal Boat Designer: You spend three years seeing the boat evolve on the computer and then you see it full size, it’s like magic! It’s the result of a lot of work of many different people. It’s the most amazing thing with a boat like this. When the boat launches, you get the feeling of everything that’s in ..read more

Watching sailboat racing is hard. Viewing distance is far and angles are misleading. Short courses off the docks is doable, but full races on a spectator boat is more about socializing. But big events like the America’s Cup or SailGP are eager to attract viewership, though a new study indicates how this has a cost elsewhere. Research led by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland found that noise from large groups of spectator boats was loud and sustained long enough to potentially impact marine mammals, fishes and invertebrate species who rely on their intricate hearing systems for proc ..read more
