Impact of vitamin D supplementation on modulating heat-shock proteins in postmenopausal women: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
Menopause

Objective The aim of this study was to examine the effect of vitamin D (VitD) supplementation on serum heat-shock proteins (HSP) in postmenopausal women (PW). Methods In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 160 PW aged 45 to 65 years with amenorrhea 12 months or more were randomized into two groups: 80 PW in VitD group (oral supplementation with 1,000 IU VitD3/d) or 80 PW in placebo group. The PW were assessed at baseline and after 10 months of intervention. Plasma concentrations of 25-hydroxyVitD (25[OH]D) were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. The association of hysterectomy with or without ovarian conservation with subclinical atherosclerosis progression in healthy postmenopausal women
Menopause

Objective While the deleterious associations of surgical menopause after bilateral oophorectomy with cardiovascular disease are documented, less is specifically known concerning subclinical atherosclerosis progression. Methods We used data from 590 healthy postmenopausal women randomized to hormone therapy or placebo in the Early versus Late Intervention Trial with Estradiol (ELITE), which was conducted from July 2005 to February 2013. Subclinical atherosclerosis progression was measured as annual rate of change in carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) over a median 4.8 years. Mixed-eff ..read more

Objective Chronic inflammation is associated with obesity and is an underlying pathophysiology for cardiovascular disease (CVD) development in postmenopausal women. This study aims to determine feasibility and efficacy of an anti-inflammatory dietary intervention to lower levels of C-reactive protein in weight stable postmenopausal women with abdominal obesity. Methods This mixed-methods pilot study used a single arm pre-post design. Thirteen women followed a 4-week anti-inflammatory, dietary intervention, optimizing consumption of healthy fats, low glycemic index wholegrains, and dietary anti ..read more

Objective This study aimed to identify barriers to hormone therapy (HT) use among women with BRCA1/2 mutations after prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO). Methods A cross-sectional, electronic survey was conducted of BRCA1/2 mutation carriers at Women and Infants Hospital, Yale Medical Center, Hartford Healthcare, and Maine Medical Center. This study was a subanalysis of a subset of female BRCA1/2 mutation carriers who had undergone a prophylactic BSO. Data were analyzed using the Fisher's exact test or t test. Results We performed a subanalysis of 60 BRCA mutation carriers who u ..read more

Objective Menopausal symptoms are common in midlife women and have broad impacts on their daily functioning and quality of life. Black cohosh extracts have been widely used to relieve menopausal symptoms. However, the comparative benefits of different combined black cohosh regimens remain inconclusive. The aim of the current updated meta-analysis is to address the comparative efficacies of different black cohosh regimens in improving menopausal symptoms. Methods Random-effect model pairwise meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to investigate the treatment effect on menop ..read more

Menopause hormone therapy and urinary symptoms: a systematic review
Menopause

Importance Urogenital changes associated with menopause are now classified as genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), which includes symptoms of urgency, frequency, dysuria, and recurrent urinary tract infections for which the recommended treatment is estrogen. However, the association between menopause and urinary symptoms and the efficacy of hormone therapy for these symptoms is uncertain. Objective Our objective was to define the relationship between menopause and urinary symptoms including dysuria, urgency, frequency, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), and urge and stress incont ..read more

Objective This study aimed to explore the risk factors for intrauterine device (IUD) embedment in postmenopausal women. Methods A total of 731 women who underwent hysteroscopy for IUD removal from January 2019 to December 2021 were included in the trial, of whom 301 were diagnosed with IUD embedment (embedded group) and 430 had a normal IUD location (control group). The following data were collected from electronic medical records: demographic traits, ultrasound findings, IUD shapes, uterine features, and hysteroscopy findings. Bivariate contingency analysis and multiple logistic regression we ..read more
