It seems like quantum computing is the core fusion of the tech industry: it’s always only a few years away, but that status hasn’t really changed for the past decade. However, since Google announced their “quantum supremacy” achievement back in 2019 and more recent news from IBM building a quantum computer with more than 400 qbits there are chances it won’t take very long indeed before quantum computing becomes the next big thing. For the cybersecurity industry that’s a big challenge, as some of the cryptography we use today will become obsolete. On the other hand, companies claiming to commer ..read more

Last updated on August 17th, 2022 at 03:49 pm A few weeks ago, marketing departments for cryptography companies went into overdrive. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) announced four algorithm standards to protect against quantum computing hacks. At least 17 companies (by our count) put out press releases insinuating they developed one or more of them. That insinuation is false so Cyber Protection Magazine decided it’s time to start demystifying quantum cryptography. Quantum computing is a technology that 99 per cent of the population will never interact with but should be ..read more

Arqit Suit Pulls Back the Curtain on Quantum

The Arqit shareholder fraud lawsuit is pulling back the curtain on the Quantum computing industry. Before it’s over we may see how much is FUD, snake oil and legitimate. Since the story broke in the Wall Street Journal, dozens of law firms are piling on claiming their product, QuantumCloud. The suit claims the product is still a prototype and the projected revenue is overstated. Arqit denied the allegations, dismissing them as most companies do (i.e. disgruntled former employees). They claim the product is being integrated into several governmental and telecom organizations. The question, howe ..read more

Last updated on May 11th, 2022 at 08:51 am The benefits of quantum computing are a bit hazy, but the danger of the technology is significant. Nation-states are pushing hard to develop quantum computers primarily to break the strongest encryption codes available. That makes governments, infrastructure organizations and corporate intellectual property at risk. That risk has led to the growth of the quantum cryptography industry to make “unbreakable encryption.” Like the computers themselves, quantum cryptography is more theoretical than actual. That doesn’t stop investors from throwing money at ..read more

Last updated on December 17th, 2021 at 10:36 pm Last week, the 58th Design Automation Conference (DAC) in San Francisco dropped a few hints that the semiconductor industry will finally consider making chips secure before manufacturing. However, not without kicking, screaming and complaining. The industry traditionally defined “security” as a means to protect against patent infringement. Protecting user data was not their problem. Brian Fuller, editor in chief for ARM, opened the first session on security (see “Trust and Verify” full video below) with a question: Is the industry is taking secur ..read more

Last updated on July 7th, 2021 at 11:17 am While still a relatively young technology, blockchain has shown some significant developments. From saviour for entire industries, to climate killer due to increasingly high energy consumption – blockchain seems to devide the tech world. Blockchain and its best known application, the Bitcoin crypto currency, are also seen as very secure mechanism. But is this really true? We spoke with Prof. Aggelos Kiayias, Chief Scientist at blockchain technology company IOHK, about the security and future of blockchain. Cyber Protection Magazine: Blockchain is usua ..read more
