Behind every athlete is their journey. The hours of practice, their family, their commitment, values, goals and achievements. Scott Govers provided us the insight into his memories of growing up in a hockey family and playing representative hockey.
Donning the Green and Gold
“I have been fortunate enough to have been selected in the Australian Indoor Squad which gives me the chance to finally live out a childhood dream of wearing the green and gold, at the Indoor World Cup in early 2025. I was selected in the Australian Indoor Squad following the gold medal at the Australian Indoor Hockey Cham ..read more

An almost entirely Sutherland Masters team has won the State over 65s Championship for the second successive year.
It was unbeaten over the weekend matches, played at Moorebank, with an impressive 13 goals for and 1 against over six games.
The Sydney South Association Team for the NSW titles was drawn from Sutho’s three Masters teams. The only player from outside them was SSHA President Rick McConnell.
The team list was David Campbell (c), Glenn Crowhurst, Noel French, Graeme Hall, Clive Harrison, Peter Hayes, Mark Hillier, Greg Kay, Rick McConnell, Peter Quinell, Robert Redding, John Ross, Do ..read more

Dave Krepp relaxing on Saturday arvo keeping Ryde out in 5th grade
We got off to a freezing, wet start of hockey last weekend when our Minkey kids toughed out some awful conditions for their weekly hitout at Sutho late on Friday afternoon.
Understandably down a bit on numbers because of the conditions and sniffle season, the kids really impressed with how keen they are. They all came off at one stage, with the adults cowering under shelter thinking, “Finally, we get to go home and get dry and warm.”
But – NUH! The kids were just coming off for a drink. Then back into it!
Here are Sutho’s littl ..read more

Last weekend was a mix of good and bad for many of our teams: some played, some didn’t, some were short of personnel, while some weren’t. And after months of the wet stuff, there was barely a drop of rain.
Our Sydney Hockey Premier League men’s teams – grades 1 to 3 – all had byes, getting a bit of a rest after tough matches against Moorebank the previous week.
It wasn’t as usual in the junior ranks, either, with the boys’ State U18 championships played at Moorebank thinning the expected lineups with Sutho players representing Sydney South. A highlight was Isaac Olsen’s six goals against New E ..read more

After a long delay because of COVID and then complications because of work and family commitments, at least some of Sutho’s very first men’s Sydney Hockey 1st grade premiership team got back together at Tradies Hockey Park on Saturday.
In our picture, from left, are one of the team managers, Bill Melchert, Grant Hollyman, Steve Cohen, Craig Turner, Mick Millar, David Bourke, Brett Shrume and coach Greg Corben. Another team member, Andrew Melchert, was there earlier in the day.
Check out the special commemorative cabinet built by Bill Melchert next time you are in the clubhouse. It’s on the rig ..read more

Hi, Sutho fans.
Sorry about the briefness of this week’s match reports; I’m guessing many usual team reporters were so chilled by the arrival of winter that their fingers may have frozen to their computer keyboards. Anyway, we have far fewer reports than usual.
Thank you to the team managers/reporters who put in the effort.
Particular thanks to our photographers who braved the challenging weather: Matt Morris (bad luck about the lack of reports for your matches, Matt), Rory Staples, Jo Momsen and Melissa Elkins.
One of the hot spots over the weekend was the Belgium v Spain men’s game in the in ..read more

If you couldn’t handle tension, being a Sutho supporter at our women’s grand finals at Olympic Park last weekend was not the place to be. The big, vocal crowd of Sutho fans got some memorable hockey.
It just could not have been closer in Sutho women’s grand final matches against Macquarie Uni last weekend:
Sutho 2 belted in a short corner conversion in the first quarter and clung on to their 1-0 lead for the rest of the game.
Sutho 1 and Uni threw everything at each other until there was a rare opening in Sutho’s defence less than six minutes from the end. Uni didn’t miss and got a 1-0 result ..read more

Sydney’s wild, wet, windy and wet weather blasted almost everything off the city’s hockey pitches last weekend.
As Rory Staples’ picture shows, Sutho U13A Gecko’s goalie, Zara, at least got to compare water sliding techniques with her Uni counterpart after their super-wet game at Daceyville on Saturday.
Rory and Gethin Perry got some terrific pictures of one of the few bits of hockey action in conditions that ranged between torrentially wet and just very wet at the Geckos’ game, which they won 4-1.
And as their pictures, as usual, kids don’t mind the wet as long they’re having a good time. Mor ..read more

Welcome back, champs. National champs. Congratulations to the Sydney South Sharks women’s team that took out their division of the national Masters Games in Perth last week.
They won their final 4-2 against Ducks Nuts, a Western Australian team that included a number of rep players.
Sutho reps in the SSHA Sharks team, pictured below, were: Lyn Smith, Lisa Cummins, Vicki Earle, Julie Singh, Karen Hodgkin, Fiona Earle, Megan Squires, Kathy Hails and Lois Scott.
We’re aiming for extended coverage of this great achievement in a future edition.
There was a big Sutho turnout at Marang on Frid ..read more

Wiggo airborne for 4th grade – Matt Morris picture
There’s a monster, huge, humungous day happening at Sutho on Saturday, with several of our very first 1st-grade men’s premiership-winning team returning for Back to Sutho Day.
Sutho won its initial top Sydney men’s title in 1991, but we couldn’t celebrate the 30th-anniversary last year because of COVID. But – happily – the Sutho boys made it a double in 1992, so we can have a double 30th celebration on Saturday.
Our first title, won 1-0 against Moorebank at Homebush, will always be in the memories of every member of the Sutho family able to se ..read more
