Heading into the 2024 Quarterfinals, Australia’s Katelin van Zyl was relaxed and ready to rumble.  A mother to two young boys, van Zyl had arranged for her mom to be in town to care for the kids all weekend so she could focus on her fitness and qualifying for Semifinals. Van Zyl felt like things were lining up well and had a great attitude going into the weekend.  “I wasn’t feeling too stressed about Quarterfinals. I had my hernia surgery three months ago, early enough so that I could be ready for the season,” she tells the Morning Chalk Up. View this post on Instagram A post sha ..read more

Dave Castro, general manager of sport at CrossFit HQ, said the review process for workout video submissions is being looked at but won’t change for the remainder of the 2024 CrossFit Games season.  This came during Castro’s weekly Week in Review podcast, where he addressed the relatively high volume of penalties given during the video review process of the Individual Quarterfinals workouts.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olgCS7jApdgVideo can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: 4/29/24 WIR – Quarterfinals workout 1 discussion. The day before the 2024 CrossFit Open started, Mary Harrison didn’t think she was going to compete. The 63-year-old had a hip replacement last June, and still isn’t 100 percent. But when the first workout was announced, she thought, “I can do this.” Three weeks later, Harrison even managed to qualify to Quarterfinals.  “I never dreamed I would go through to the Quarterfinals. When I got the email, I thought they must have emailed the wrong person. And then I was like, ‘Oh shit,’” says Harrison, who started CrossFit at CrossFit Palm Harbor in Florida three years ago. Is CrossFit’s Video Review Working? Questions Surround an Uncertain Process

Throughout a tumultuous and, for some, heartbreaking week, the 2024 CrossFit Quarterfinals leaderboards continued to shift as more and more athletes were hit with minor and major penalties.  This development brought to mind the penalties given out in 2023 on the V sit-up workout (Individual Test 4), where 200 athletes’ scores were altered after the fact. This system is far from new — since the early days of the Open, video reviews have altered scores, dashed hopes, and changed the landscape of the sport’s leaderboards after these workouts have wrapped up.  As of Sunday, April 28, Cro ..read more

Andrea Nisler, twice a member of the Fittest Team on Earth (2021 and 2022), did most of the 2024 CrossFit Open while pregnant.  She went on to qualify for Quarterfinals and performed the workouts just six weeks after giving birth, stirring a small social media frenzy around the topic of women and fitness postpartum.  Remind me: Individual Quarterfinals took place earlier this month, and athletes were given four workouts to perform in two separate submission windows. It’s important to note that video submissions are currently under review, and the leaderboard is subject to change un ..read more

Was the 2024 CrossFit Quarterfinals Missing a Strength Test?

Since CrossFit launched Quarterfinals in 2021, there has always been at least one workout that could be considered a strength test. In 2021, it was the four-rep max front squat. In 2022, it was The Other Total — a one-rep max clean, bench press, and overhead squat. Last season (2023), the strength test was the third workout, which included burpee box jump-overs and 15 clean-and-jerks at 275 pounds for men and 185 pounds for women. Once again, when the workouts were announced this year, one of them looked like it was all about strength: Workout 4. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ..read more

Trevor Jones has done the CrossFit Open workouts for the last eight years, but he only registered for the first time this season. That’s because Jones did his seven other Opens in the midst of a 27-year prison sentence in Colorado after being convicted of murder when he was 17 years old. “I was involved in a homicide over a gun deal that had gone wrong, and a kid who was 16 lost his life,” Jones tells the Morning Chalk Up, describing what happened back in 1996. Jones says he was trying to scam a kid — who was selling him and his friends a gun — out of $100. According to Jones, pulling the tr ..read more
