The 32 mile stretch of coastline that sits on the southernmost point of Alabama has an extremely rich history. From fishing to international trade, this small section of coast has been vital to those who’ve been lucky enough to call it home. To the very west, a fort was constructed in the early 1800s in order to fend off intruders. Nearing completion around 1834, Simon Bernard is credited with designing the pentagon shaped structure. Fort Morgan still stands today and is open for the public to explore! The 32 mile stretch of beaches on the coast of Alabama is one of the crown jewels of the Un ..read more

For more than 60 years, this Piper Apache has gone a few places, seen a few things, carried a few passengers and trained a few pilots. The picture above shows Sweet Potato on the ramp at the First Flight Airport with the Wright Brothers Memorial in the background, possibly taken by the plane's former owner. It was previously registered to an owner in North Carolina (the internet is great for some things...). Consider this: Sweet Potato came off the assembly line just 51 years after Orville and Wilber made that first powered flight in 1903. The airplane is now more than 60 years old! There's p ..read more

The gear is down, but you may notice in the photo above that the wheels are not touching the ground! Ah, the yellow jacks underneath this airframe are giving the support it needs while some necessary repairs are being made to the landing gear. Getting Sweet Potato back on her own feet will be the first big step in getting this aging airframe back into the air. You must learn to walk before you can run (fly), right? At least when the plane is ready to roll, it will have a new pair of shoes. Fresh tires for the mains and nose wheel assemblies when the plane is ready to roll out of the hangar ..read more

Jack Edwards National Airport will soon become a tower-controlled airport, expected sometime in the fall of 2021. However, during the hours the tower is not in operation, airport operations will revert back to the way it's been for decades and all pilots are expected to announce their position and intentions on the CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency). We tend to hear a lot of non-standard radio calls and phraseology, which usually doesn't pose much of a problem unless it needlessly ties up the frequency when the pattern is congested. One problem broadcast we hear time and time again, fro ..read more

As we discussed in a previous blog post, both engines on Sweet Potato were old and tired. In fact, according to the engine logs the last time one of them had been overhauled was 1979! Time for that to change. Our FAA-certified A&P mechanics removed both engines from the airframe and sent them to Pinnacle Aircraft Engines in Silverhill, AL for the overhaul. We received both Lycomings in beautiful shape as you can see in the pictures. Almost looks like brand new engines from the factory. Our previous experience with Pinnacle includes an overhauled Lycoming O-320 D2J for one of our flight sc ..read more
