Snow covered roses.
A sign to winter retreat.
Like the fish we wait.
Resting quiet in winter's peace.
The fist snow fell. We heard it was coming and took heed. I pulled down all of our summer hammocks, chairs, and awnings. Put away tools and closed up the hoop house for the coming winter. As my practice dictates, I take the winter off from fishing. This year the first measurable snow storm was my cue that the time had come. I had hoped to get out "just one more time" but the work in my wood shop, the autumnal yard work and the usual honey-do list took over.

Tenkara Sings in
Hills of Austria
Getting to travel and fish in another country is a real privilege that I cannot take for granted. I spent the first week of September in Mittersill, Austria. An adventure of a lifetime with good friends, great food, and bucket-list fishing. I am so grateful.
Austria is a trip that you really must put on your bucket list. I was joined by Karel Lansky, a veteran of fishing this area, who was an excellent activities director, guide and insider. The trip was made even more special with David West-Beale joining us. David and I hit it off swimmi ..read more

“Fishing provides that connection with the whole living world. It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way. A form of meditation, some form of communion with levels of yourself that are deeper than the ordinary self”
-Ted Hughes
I have mentioned to a few folks that I have been planning a trip to Austria now for about 10 months. My good friend Karel Lansky and I try to get together every summer we can for a fishing trip. The last couple of years now he has made the trip to Colorado. (He used to live here but has since tran ..read more

“It is life, I think, to watch the water. A man can learn so many things.”
— Nicholas Sparks
While the rivers here in Colorado begin to subside my excitement is beginning to flood. I have a list as usual of the places I want to slip away to and I have gotten out a few times in spite of run off. This summer though I seem to be on a roll with special trips planned over the next few months.
By mid-month July My son and I will be meeting up with a friend and his son for some camping and exploring some fishing in the Rockies of Utah. After that I have some plans to do another ..read more

Welcome to the Birthday Edition.
“A birthday is a time to reflect on the year gone by, but to also set your goals for the upcoming year.”
- Catherine Pulsifer.
June 17th ....I begin my 56th trip on the earth circumnavigating around the sun. While turning 56 isn't really a milestone birthday, each year burns a little when I look at my "memento mori" calendar. Each Friday I mark another box off on the calendar and I am about to complete the line of 52 weeks. I have long passed the point where I have more days to live than I have already lived. Looking at life throu ..read more

Any day out on the river with your dog is worth savoring. Fezzik really is the best river buddy a guy could ask for.
"Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans."

The temperatures have started to rise and with it the oportunity to try and tempt a trout waking from the deep cold waters. I have been out now a few times this spring season and have had mostly good days. There is a time in the spring where som ..read more

“Our real discoveries come from chaos, from going to the place that looks wrong and stupid and foolish.”
-Chuck Palahniuk
author of Invisible Monsters
I am up in the mountains today at my wife's family cabin with my son. I have a few days here before my wife comes up and we switch out and I go back down the mountain. The snow is still covering the high country. But the sun is out and the river is sparkling. While I have no inclination to fish today I know the feeling of knowing that I am almost there at its edge. Its just on the other side of my patience.
There is much to do each m ..read more

“Let the waves carry you where the light can not.”
-Mohit Kaushik
And the winter continues. I never get used to Colorado winters. They only creep into spring in subtle waves. We will have some really wonderful weather in the mid 50s and even 60s. Then a sudden drop in temperatures and suddenly snow. Then warmer weather again, to melt the snow and create the months of "mud season" where my dogs track in paw prints across the hardwood floors and up onto the couch. It is a little like watching a tide come in and go out again, each time getting a little less severe and less oppressive on my p ..read more

ON THE PATH
"Groundhogs be damned...
... its still winter here."
I keep looking out my front door as I go to take my dog for a walk twice a day and I can't help but sigh with more than a little frustration at the snow that still remains on my front lawn. I have lived in Colorado long enough now that I should be used to our winters. But each year I have to remind myself that no matter what the ground hog says, Winter is going to last until mid to late March at the earliest. I need to remind myself t ..read more
