What’s the meaning of life? Why are we here? We have no idea, to be honest, but we have a firm suspicion that the answers to these questions have to do with our one and only home: Earth. Planeteers star-gaze a lot (you have to when your satellite office is in orbit), and we believe in using space to help life on Earth. But we also believe something else: the deeper you look into the depths of space, the more you appreciate just how special our bright blue marble really is. The planet is in peril. We spend 51 weeks of the year discussing this fact in detail and sharing the ways we support initi ..read more

Planet Superpowers: Looking Deeper

Look deeply into a place, event, or object in a way that characterizes its physical attributes over time — which are sometimes invisible to the naked eye. Earth observation (EO) data has revolutionized how governments, companies, and organizations understand the climate patterns, human activity, economies, and natural resources that matter most. This includes the ability to look deeply into a place, event, or object in a way that characterizes its physical attributes over time, which are sometimes invisible to the naked eye. In previous posts we’ve explored how EO imagery allows us to look bac ..read more

Planet Superpowers: Looking Closer

Look at a place, event, or object in much closer detail than previously captured. Earth observation (EO) satellites have revolutionized our understanding of our planet, providing invaluable data for various applications. Satellite data allows organizations to see and monitor change across broad geographies and timescales — and take informed action. However, sometimes the devil is in the details; and in these cases a more precise view is needed. High-resolution satellite imagery captures images with incredible clarity, revealing features as small as a tree. Let’s take a look at how this data al ..read more

In November 2023, Planet launched Pelican-1, the first technology demonstration small satellite of our next-generation, high-resolution Pelican constellation that is expected to be deployed over the next few years. The primary mission of Pelican-1 is to validate the hardware and software aspects of Planet’s small satellite bus platform, which we call the Smallsat Platform. This platform is common between our Pelican and Tanager constellations, and is designed, manufactured, integrated, and tested entirely in-house at Planet HQ.  The Smallsat Platform is only the tip of the pyramid. It con ..read more

Deliver Planet data layers on Planet Insights Platform so you can leverage scalable and customizable imagery analysis tools. A subscription is one way that Planet delivers data for you to use in your workflows. You specify an area of interest, a time of interest, and a data resource; in turn Planet will deliver all the data that matches your criteria. You can subscribe to receive historical data from the archive — or to receive imagery for ongoing monitoring as it is captured. You can use the Planet Subscriptions API to subscribe to Planet data layers including PlanetScope, SkySat, and Planeta ..read more

Planet Superpowers: Looking Back
Planet Pulse

Look back in time and space in order to establish a historical baseline across broad areas. Albert Einstein said it best: “If you want to know the future, look at the past.”  Understanding any kind of change often begins by examining historical patterns. This is certainly true for developments across the Earth’s surface, whether natural or human-driven. And as Earth observation (EO) data becomes more available and affordable, greater numbers of governments and businesses are using it to track change over time and identify trends that help predict how the future will unfold. EO Data and Br ..read more

Planet Superpowers: Looking Broader

Look across vast, far-reaching geographies and timescales to gain a full picture of events. The age-old expression “you can’t see the forest for the trees” reminds us that seeing things up-close can compromise the greater picture. In addition, it necessitates the practice of zooming out to gain a broader perspective and see larger patterns.  In Earth observation (EO), an area of interest may only reveal part of the story. Perhaps there’s a trail of smoke, which begs the question, “Where is the source?” Or evidence of building damage after a storm, which leads us to ask,  “How widespr ..read more

Measuring Earth Dynamics With Planetary Variables
Planet Pulse
by Matt Ballard

Learn how these analysis-ready data feeds can be used to measure a range of important conditions. Earth is in a constant state of change, from natural processes like the water cycle or seasonal temperatures to human activities like deforestation or agriculture. Governments and businesses alike who are responsible for managing broad areas need to monitor, measure, and report on these dynamic systems to mitigate risk, optimize their operations, and protect the environment. Earth observation (EO) enables organizations to manage broad areas so they can respond efficiently to changes that matter. B ..read more

Today, governments and businesses are facing immense challenges to reduce risk, lower costs, remain compliant, and optimize performance in a time of rapid global change. It is our belief that organizations require the ability to dynamically monitor, measure, and report on assets across space and time – look broader, backward, closer and deeper, to make sense and take action. That’s why we’re so excited to announce the Planet Insights Platform, the next milestone in our journey to provide multidimensional Earth insights.  The Planet Insights Platform is the all-in-one place for unifying ou ..read more
