In just over one week’s time, eight Canadian Premier League clubs will select two players apiece t the CPL-U SPORTS Draft, inviting the underclassmen to trial with a professional sporting side.
If all goes well, those trials can turn into U SPORTS contracts or even fully professional deals, depending on their performance on the pitch and early career direction. With 200 players declaring eligibility, there’s a lot more CPL hopefuls than there are spots to give them.

Canada’s great all-time goalscorer played her last international match last night.
With 190 international goals, 40-year-old forward Christine Sinclair concluded her international career as the top goalscorer in the entire world. Last night’s one-nil win over Australia marking her 331st match for the women’s national team.

After spending two seasons on Canadian soil with York United, Australian defender Tass Mourdoukoutas has confirmed his departure following the expiry of his contract.
The 24-year-old centre-back arrived to the CPL from the Western Sydney Wanderers last year, procuring 38 appearances for the Nine Stripes throughout the next two seasons. He was a mainstay in the club ever since his midseason arrival in 2022, helping the side reach playoffs this year.

After winning four league titles over the last five seasons, Dutch centre-back Daniel Krutzen has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 27.
The former Forge defender had enjoyed three North Star Shield wins with Forge FC, captaining the side to their third playoff championship win for his final match with the hammers. He spent this season with Phoenix Rising, where a recurrent knee injury sidelined interrupted his season’s progress, but still couldn’t prevent him from winning the USL Championship last month.

It’s been four years since Halifax’s first-ever signing graced the Canadian Premier League, but Canadian midfielder Zachary Sukunda will now be returning with Valour FC.
The Winnipeg-based club has aimed to sign Canadian athletes with CPL experience in their docket, a reasonably optimistic move seeing as they made eight acquisitions in that bracket in this year’s wooden spoon season.

Canadian forward Shaan Hundal is returning to Winnipeg some three seasons after last featuring for the side.
The 24-year-old proved a history-maker for expansion side Vancouver FC this year, scoring the club’s first-ever goal in a hot start that saw him tally five goals his opening nine games.

After his first season as a professional coach saw the Halifax Wanderers establish a fluid and clearly identified style of play – and reach playoffs – it’s no surprise to see Patrice Gheisar’s stay out east extended through to the end of 2025.

Canadian Premier League regular season champions Cavalry FC have released their end-of-season roster update following a campaign that saw them qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Cup and finish as runners-up in the playoff championship.

As was reported yesterday, Canada Soccer Business has now confirmed the sale of York United FC to Mexican-based ownership consortium Game Plan Sports Group.
The sale comes just seven months after Canada Soccer Business had ‘bet on itself’ to purchase the club from its original founders in order to find a new, long-term owner of the club who could stabilize the club within the Toronto market.
