LEGALLY BRIEF: Expungement – A Second Chance
Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Blog
by icadvinc

Expungement laws in Indiana are designed to provide individuals with an opportunity to seal certain criminal records. This can be critical to survivors of domestic violence as it helps reduce barriers that survivors face. Past criminal records are known to be barriers to employment, housing, and other aspects long after the abuse has ended. Expunging past criminal records can help survivors take control of their narrative. There are some general guidelines to consider around eligibility for expungement. There is typically a waiting period before a person becomes eligible to petition for expung ..read more

A Youth’s Story
Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Blog

Recently, we posted a blog written by our Young Adult Intern about the experiences young people in Indiana are having in the current political atmosphere. This week, we are sharing a story from one of our Youth Council members that speak to these experiences. ICADV is thankful to work alongside intelligent, brave and strong young people that want to make a change in Indiana.   My name is Graylie, and I’m a trans woman in my senior year at the Academy of Science and Entrepreneurship here in Bloomington. Nearly every single person at my school I can call an ally to the queer community. I’m ..read more

A Youth’s Voice
Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Blog

Indiana youth were asked to describe their experiences living in this country for the past few years, to which they responded with the following: “demoralizing,” “I want to move,” “a lesson learned,” “exhausting,” and “radicalizing.” Like many other youths living in Indiana, I often hear adults describe the new generation as “too soft” or “thin-skinned” when approached with oppressive language, actions, or even laws. Though I may be biased as someone of said generation, I feel as though minimizing an entire people to all but a few adjectives is a reckless and mis/un-informed move to make, but ..read more

We’re the Kids in America

Like many other youths living in Indiana, I often hear adults describe the new generation as “too soft” or “thin-skinned” when approached with oppressive language, actions, or even laws. Though I may be biased as someone of said generation, I feel as though we are the exact opposite. For instance, some have become entirely desensitized to violence and injustice. We were raised in a post-9/11 world, we watched our families go through the 2008 recession and we witnessed the decades-long American involvement in the Middle East among many other formative world events. We have been in a constant st ..read more

Members of the National Rifle Association (NRA) will be gathering for their annual convention in Indianapolis this weekend, and Indiana legislators have heralded the event. The NRA convention is happening in a week where our neighbors in Louisville manage the grief of a mass shooting. As the frequency of these devastating mass shooting events continues to rise (147 already in 2023 as of April 12, 2023), it is unlikely that the NRA will be able to convene their convention at a time when our country is not mourning gun violence. In spite of the heartbreaking frequency of public shootings, resear ..read more

At the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, we are working to build a culture of inclusivity where all of us are seen and supported across our differences. We believe that by working for communities where everyone belongs and is valued, we create the conditions where all of us can have thriving lives free from violence. With this vision, ICADV celebrates LBGTQ+ youth and calls on Indiana lawmakers to join us in our commitment to inclusion by rejecting HB 1608 and SB 480.    The ICADV Youth Council is a group of Indiana teens representing multiple counties who work to prevent ..read more

March 1: The Disability Day of Mourning

In March, Indiana observes Disability Awareness Month. The voices of people with disabilities are amplified through artworks, books, film, and words. It’s a great time to celebrate how far we have come and acknowledge the extremely long way we have to go in ensuring people with disabilities live lives of respect and choice. March 1st is known as the Disability Day of Mourning. Since 2012, across the nation, we honor and mourn the deaths of people with disabilities whose lives were taken away by their parents and caregivers. The legal term for these kinds of murders are called filicide. Not onl ..read more
