Pros and Cons of Rattlesnake Vaccine For Dogs

Do rattlesnake vaccines for dogs really work or are they just something that makes pet owners feel more at ease in snake country? The most commonly used rattlesnake vaccine – Crotalus Atrox Toxoid – made by Red Rock Biologics, has been around since 2000 and has been administered to more than 150,000 dogs since that time. Do Rattlesnake Vaccines Work? According to Dr. Valerie Wiebe of the University of California there is “little fact-based data to support the efficacy of the vaccine”. In a study conducted from 2006-2012 on 82 dogs bitten by rattlesnakes, it was found that “no statistically sig ..read more

As far as dog friendly parks in Central Texas go, Garey Park is in our top ten favorite places to go.  This huge, 525 acre “city” park is located in Georgetown (Williamson County) and is just a short drive away from Round Rock and the north side of Austin. If you’re looking for Texas Hill country beauty, well groomed walking trails and even a fenced dog park, Garey park is well worth the trip. What Makes Garey Park So Special? Jack and Camille Garey donated their private estate and horse ranch to the city of Georgetown in 2005, along with five million dollars to develop and maintain it. V ..read more

The Simplest Way to Water Houseplants While On Vacation
Dog On A Road Trip Travel Blog

When we travel with our dogs to go and spend some quality time camping in the great outdoors, the last thing we want to worry about is if our houseplants back home are dying from lack of water. We wanted to share with our readers an inexpensive, low-tech way to water houseplants while on vacation. They’re called clay watering spikes, and they last almost forever and cost just a few dollars each. The concept of how they work is very simple. Unglazed terracotta clay is porous, and the spikes release a small amount of water into the soil each day until the bottle is empty. Low Tech Plant Watering ..read more

Kanab Utah Day Trips – Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Kanab, Utah was a great place for us to use as a “base camp” for exploring all the cool (pet-friendly) nearby places. One of my favorites was the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, located an easy drive of about 20 miles from town. Beautiful Pink Color Of The Dunes The Coral Pink Sand Dunes, so named for their orangey hue, are formed from sandstone, and colored by the same iron oxides and minerals that give us the spectacular red-rock formations we’ve enjoyed seeing in places like Kodachrome State Park. What happens to create these sand dunes is the break-down of sandstone over time by wind, water, ice an ..read more

Dispersed Camping At Elephant Butte State Park – New Mexico

After a leisurely drive from Brownwood, Texas, we arrived at Elephant Butte Reservoir in the late afternoon. Primitive camping here means that you are able to choose your own spot in one of three general locations. Our family took the time to investigate each of the three options, trying to find a place where the sand was fairly well packed for easy access (and exit) and where we’d have a little privacy from other campers. Long Point had quite a few visitors the day we arrived, and a number of RV’s lined up along the shore. Main Campground likewise was busy, but easy to pull into, and with wel ..read more

Stevie Ray the dog visits the Dinosaur Tracks hike near Kanab, Utah. This is a 0.7 mile, out and back hike. We Saw Dinosaur Tracks Near Kanab! This morning, while it was still nice and cool, my humans took me along on a hike to see the dinosaur tracks just outside of Kanab, Utah. To get there, they drove just a couple of miles north of town on US-89-N to the Port of Entry station. We parked in the parking lot next to the porta-potty, where the trail also starts. The first thing that I noticed was all of the small lizards, who greeted us at every turn. I wanted to chase them at first, but was t ..read more

Rules For Dogs At Enchanted Rock Have Changed
Dog On A Road Trip Travel Blog

I really enjoy telling you all about my great road trips, but sadly our last one wasn’t as good as it could’ve been. Don’t get me wrong, it was a fun trip, just not quite what I expected. You see, I’ve been to Enchanted Rock State Park several times over the years. The last time was in 2016, when I had a little bit less gray in my muzzle. That was a super-fun trip, and we got to hike to the top of the huge granite dome, where you can see for miles and miles across the beautiful Texas hill country. Enchanted Rock State Park’s namesake is a monolith (a fancy word for “one big rock”), sort of lik ..read more
