I wrote several letters to the guys my dad served with. I recieved this letter and it explained several things for me. My dad brought back a set of domineos he carved out of fish heads while working at the coal mines on Nagazaki. I was trying to document them. I recieved a very interesting letter from Rufus and wanted to share it with you. Pat Shelton Blankenship Daughter of Archie Shelton 131st Field Artillery...Battery E September 29,2003 Ms. Pat... And found another two wrecks in addition. Result. "A mystery has been "finally solved" after divers found the resting place of a missing German U-boat. The vessel UC-18 was lost in 1917 after a battle with a secret Royal Navy ship, Lady Olive, which was also sunk. It took a team four years to locate and verify the find in the English Channel, which has been filmed for a BBC documentary. Underwater filmmaker Karl Taylor said he was "elated". The battle between UC-18 and Lady Olive is the only... Guernsey U-Boat mystery solved ..read more

Number of wrecks identified this year, I'm starting to think someone's working off a bloody long list. "A team of divers has finally identified the wreck of a ship which sank off Orkney in 1918 with the loss of 13 lives. The SS Express sank north of Scapa Flow following a collision with another ship. The cargo vessel had provided a lifeline service working between Orkney and mainland Scotland. Expedition leader Will Schwarz said the dive team were "absolutely bouncing" that their... Or finally identified might be a better description. Wreck's been known about since the '80s. "A World War One German U-boat has been identified by divers off the coast of Shetland. The SM UC-55 submarine was sunk about eight miles south-east of Lerwick by the Royal Navy in 1917. Divers aboard the Stromness boat Valhalla have become the first to inspect its wreckage. The U-boat had been laying mines in the convoy channel between Orkney and Shetland before being forced to surface due... WW1 U-Boat found off Shetland ..read more

And also a German torpedo boat. Who needs Mediaeval kings? "Two scientists believe they have found a historic Royal Navy submarine buried under a park - confirming an urban legend which has been around for nearly a century. Since the 1930s, residents of Dartmouth - home to naval officer training for more than 150 years - have been convinced the wreck of a submarine is buried under a coastal park. Experts from the University of Winchester used ground penetrating radar to scan the site in... WW1 British sub found under park ..read more

Neolithic warfare caused 'boom & bust'

Not sure how much of a 'surprise' this counts as. Would also like to compare it with genetic studies as well as climactic variations. "A new study out of the Complexity Science Hub concludes that social disintegration and violent conflict played a crucial role in shaping the population dynamics of early farming societies in Neolithic Europe. Complexity scientist Peter Turchin and his team at CSH, working as part of an international and interdisciplinary collaboration, may have added a... Neolithic warfare caused 'boom & bust ..read more
