Woohoo! Its Windy in Paraparaumu. A Southerly was forecast and it kicked in as predicted.
Location: Paraparaumu Beach (Marine Parade)
Equipment: Naish 3.6m, Naish Hover Ultra 125L
Wind: 8-14 kts S
A nice Southerly wind at Paraparaumu Beach meant I unpacked the 3.6m Wing today. It was slightly offshore and there were holes in the wind but I was keen to get out there and keep progressing. The water was pretty choppy and the current was flowing North.
Today was Challenging. We had positioned the foil further forward on the board to try and encourage the l ..read more

The Weekend was calm and despite our best efforts trying to find wind we didn't manage to get out on the Water.
But I noticed a weak South West Wind was predicted for Paraparaumu and if the land warms up enough sometimes this can drag in a stronger sea breeze. It was still a little light (7-10kts) but with the Big Wing I was keen for some more practice.
Equipment: Naish Wing 7m, Naish Hover Ultra 125L
Location: Paraparaumu Beach Northern End
Wind: 7-10kts
The first outward tack was SLOW! I was a bit puzzled as the wind felt ok and I was standing and feeling confid ..read more

It is Friday (today) and I have been watching the wind all week!
A Steady Northerly has been forecast approx 10-16kts. Sounds perfect to me. I have spent most of the day dreaming about getting up on that foil.
We get to the beach at about 1pm and find a gentle 4-5kt wind.
Equipment: Naish Wing 7m 2020, Naish Hover Ultra 125L
Location: Paraparaumu Beach North
Wind: 5kts
When my partner ordered the 7m wing (a big size) I didn't ever expect to use it. But I was so eager to get on my new board today that up it went. I was a bit wary of how I would ..read more

Equipment: Naish Odyseuss SUP, Naish 4m Wing (v1)
Location: Paraparaumu Beach Northern end
Wind: SE 7-9 kts
The wind was a bit light today but I am feeling so confident after my first 2 sessions I was keen to have another go. My first run was a slow tack out towards Kapiti Island. The wind was light but I was moving so I was happy.
I haven't managed a turn yet and the wide large volume SUP is making that a challenge so I knelt down and somehow got the board to turn while on my knees. But to my surprise when I turned to go back to shore I was headi ..read more

After the Buzz of Standing on the SUP and using the Wing I was keen to get back out there ASAP. I should mention this is a journey I am lucky enough to be sharing with my partner who is an excellent kitesurfer but also sees the advantage of being able to wing in conditions that aren't suited to Kiting.
The mistral board was too small for him to feel stable on and practice wing control so for our second attempt we took a bigger volume SUP.

A New Year and a New Adventure!
I learned how to kitesurf about 6yrs ago but haven't managed to get out as much as we would like over the last few years (largely due to work commitments). It also needs a lot of things to fall into place. Finding the right conditions on the right day with no work and family commitments has been a challenge.
When foiling came along it opened up more opportunities as now you could go out in lighter winds. But I wasn't sure if Kite foiling was my thing.
So once I started seeing people getting into Wing Foiling I thought it look liked something th ..read more

I can now Wing Foil!
I have had a few sessions since I last updated the blog, and can now say I am wing foiling. I am getting good runs out and back and if the conditions are right am getting up on the foil consistently. I am not turning yet, and can feel that will be a challenge and there is Still lots of room for improvement but it feels GREAT!
We have made a few trips up to Foxton Estuary. The reason behind this is the flat water (doesn't get as chopped up as Paraparaumu and Waikanae Beach) and it works in a South Easterly wind. It also works in NW, W and E winds.

After my successful run on Monday I couldn't wait to get back on the water to practice some more (although the body is feeling a little tired!). A storm blew in yesterday and it was far too windy and rough to get out, but we were hoping the Southerly forecast for today would settle things down.

We worked Sunday so we could have some time off today to get some more foil practice in.
Location: Paraparaumu Main Beach
Equipment: Naish Matador 5m (then switched to 6m), Naish Hover 225L, Naish Jet 1650
Wind: 9-11kts
We chose Paraparaumu Beach today as it was going to give us the calmest water in a Northerly Wind. Unfortunately it was an outgoing tide so the tide was running with the wind, effectively taking some power out of the wind. It also meant it was hard to stay upwind, so there was a bit of walking today!
After a few runs on the 5m Wing, and a few walks ..read more

A Southerly Wind was forecast for Kapiti today so we headed to Waikanae in the hope of finding some reasonably calm water and wind. It was very light in the proximity of the Waikanae Boat Club, but we could see the wind out on the water. We drove down to the Estuary area in the hope that the wind would channel through the Estuary. This proved to be the case and we measured approx 9-11kts S.
