OK, well aware the French army used Panthers for a few years post war and other projects were examined but what IF the Panther 2 was resurrected as a means of bringing industryu within what was then West Germany up to snuff and selling Panther 2 with off the shelf components?   A Rover Meteor perhaps and whatever guns, sights, radio's etc.   What would the thing look like and could it possibly be competitive against Centurion et al?   Not connled together remains, new build ..read more

Greek Order Of Battle 1989

I open this thread to drop any information regarding the Greek order of battle in 1989 for Pat Callahan's project "NATO Order of Battle" which can be found in this site http://www.microarmormayhem.com. He has asked for more info on lesser known armies like the Greek. I can provide some information on the Greek army. There is a lot of info out there but also a lot of info is missing. Unfortunately I don't believe I will ever be able to draw a complete OOB, but the current version can be improved considerably.   I'll start with ASDEN (High Military Command of Interior and Islands). It is im ..read more

Footage of Spanish Civil War National troops after lifting of the siege of Toledo

This could be newly discovered imaginery. I think most of the troop footage is staged. Soldiers in the darker field shirts could be Falangists wearing their   characteristic dark blue shirts. Translated description: Quote © Hearst Newsreel footage courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Packard Humanities Institute, by agreement with the Real Academia de Bellas Artes y Ciencias Históricas de Toledo This is a video of great clarity and documentary value that shows various images in Toledo and its province in the fall of 1936, at the end of September and the begin ..read more

Will be making a pilgrimage to the D Day sites in Normandy for the first time in my life. Looking forward to it, but unfortunately, not able to spend a month and a half there. LOL. Only have 3 days and part of a 4th day here. The plan is to rent a car in Paris and drive out there. Will arrive in the area in the evening. Since I am a Canadian now, I plan to visit Beny Sur Mer Canadian Cemetery as a must do. I understand there is a Canadian monument at Les Place des Canadiens ( or something like that), which should be visited at night when it's lighted up.  What other must see/do places tha ..read more

Was it worth the investment by the Allied US, British and Australian forces to reinforce the Dutch Colonies?    The Natural resources not withstanding,   Dutch Military Forces commited to the Islands were barely enough for Policing duties without significent investment by the Dutch Government.   After the Fall of the Dutch Republic,  The Dutch Government in Exile attempted to make up for the lack of investment in the East Indies but the majority of purchased equipment from the US failed to arrive in time before the Japanese Invasion.   The lack of q ..read more

Friendly fire from box formations in 8th Air Force raids?

Finished watching Masters of the Air (twice). LOL. I was curious. The bomber formations were supposed to keep as tight a formation as possible. When under attack by Luftwaffe fighters, and returning fire, I would think there was a high chance of gunners hitting other bombers in their formation. Are there any stats on losses suffered this way? Were gunners trained to hold fire when enemy planes fly through their formation?  ..read more

The US assessment of the Greek-Turkish crisis of 1987.   It’s been 35 years since Greece and Turkey came close to war over the disputed continental shelf between the two countries, oil exploration and a planned Turkish “research” ship’s drilling in disputed waters. In a classified report written a few months after the crisis, a US military analyst, Harry Dinella, that Greece and Turkey would fight to a standstill at their shared land border in Thrace; that Greece was capable, thanks to its naval and air superiority in the Aegean, of defending all its major islands, forcing Turkey to seek ..read more

IDF ORBAT

I'd rather not create overly specific threads so I'm dedicating this to the IDF's ORBAT in general.  It has been revealed today that the IDF will be shutting down its "recon-fire" companies in the armor and infantry brigades. Initially revealed in 2021 as an evolution of the old support company, it was criticized primarily by the armor brigades as removing a force multiplier. The IDF cites the need for added capacity for a maneuvering force for this reversal. I do not know how wise it is. Certainly gives off an internal politics vibe. I do know that the ability to operate drones, direct f ..read more
