“Would you address how you adjust your looks to be more casual without losing your classic polished style?” Thank you for the thoughtful questions that give me practical subjects for content. The blazer is several years old, but this one and this one are similar. I feel perfectly content wearing a blazer and jeans to almost any function. However, my usual style can be too fancy for a casual Saturday afternoon lunch. I originally put together the look above, but it felt more appropriate for a dinner date. When I stopped to think about where we were going, I knew I would feel more comfortable if ..read more

Accent Colors

Red has always been my power color. It makes me feel like a superhero whenever I wear a red blazer. All my favorite scarves have some bold red in the pattern. I have a few red tops, a quilted jacket, a vest, and a short red trench coat. Red and royal blue are the accent colors in my wardrobe. Everyone can wear red if they find the right tone for their complexion. I need a true vivid red with icy blue undertones. An orange-red makes me look like I haven’t slept well. Red works perfectly with my wardrobe’s black, white, gray, and shades of blue, so it is a favorite. However, retailers don’t al ..read more

The Versatility of Simplicity

A great wardrobe’s foundation includes the basics perfect for you and your lifestyle. My daily casual looks and combinations often start with a white tee and jeans that evolve as activities change. For example, the tissue-weight white tee here is the ideal foundation for various layered looks. It skims the body without being bulky or too loose. The slightly bootcut jeans here look equally good with block-heeled pumps, chunky loafers, or short boots. We often have lunch with a group of friends on Friday afternoons. This delightful group includes grandparents, their son-in-law, adult grandchild ..read more

The Bag Edit

There are rarely used Dooney and Bourke handbags in my collection, so I’ve decided to sell them. I’m offering these bags to my blog friends first since so many of you have asked about purchasing them in the past. The domed satchel bags are made of Italian Saffiano leather, which is highly scratch resistant, durable, and exceptionally easy to keep clean. The red and black bags are the same style and size. #RED300 This bag measures twelve inches lengthwise by ten inches tall by five inches in width at the base. The handles extend three inches above the ten-inch height of the bag. The images in ..read more

Celebrations make everyday life seem special, so we always look for something to cheer about. One of my favorite sayings is, “Yay for us!” We ordered champagne at lunch in the middle of a month with no holidays. The server smiled as she popped the cork and asked what we were celebrating; without missing a beat, I answered, “It’s Saturday!” She enjoyed my response so much; she remembered us when we visited again almost a year later. In keeping with enjoying each day as if it were a special event (it is!), we wear our good clothes every day and drink champagne for no particular reason. We hav ..read more

Evolving Style

I enjoy reading the comments and emails from you. However, after diving into trends and sharing some of my newer purchases, there were outcries of “NO, don’t change, keep your classic, predictable style.” So, today I wanted to share an example of how the subtle evolution of our style can represent the person we have become while expressing our unique personality. I am always open to change and have selectively embraced trends since my first job in the fashion industry in 1976. But remember that emergent trends and passing fads are very different things. 2023 Susan After 60 Saturday afternoon l ..read more

Cashmere -Wool Poncho

This poncho is a new addition because it is warm, soft, supple, and a color that makes me happy. It takes my tee and jeans up a notch on a sixty-five-degree, balmy day when I’m doing nothing more exciting than going to the grocery store. It can also be gathered around your neck like a warm scarf under a coat when the weather turns icy. Similar jeans are here. A similar long sleeve tee is here. The Cashmere-Wool Poncho is here. The sunglasses are here. A similar bracelet is here. (Use the code SAS10 for $10 off any one item at Beauty in Stone Jewelry.) The handbag is here. (I like it so mu ..read more

Do you look forward to getting dressed each day? Do your clothes and accessories allow for creativity? As mentioned in a previous post, I grew bored with basics always worn conservatively, so I’ve added a few new items to spice up my classic wardrobe. A red tunic is the focus today, so I’ll show you a few ways I plan to style it. I can wear the tunic with crepe slacks and heels for a dinner date with Mr. Mickey. The wild poppy tunic is here. The crepe pants are here. Similar suede pumps are here. A similar clutch is here. Similar earrings are here. The pearl bracelet is actually a necklace wr ..read more

Sweater Love

“What is the most worn garment in your collection?” After giving this some thought, I award that prize to my ash gray cashmere sweater. I purchased it from Everlane in 2018 and have worn it countless times. When you find a piece that is the perfect building block, you will likely use it often and in many ways. I wear a gray sweater at least once per week in cooler weather and sometimes over my shoulders in warmer weather as a buffer against overzealous air conditioning. A simple gray sweater looks great with scarves, vests, or jackets. Shades of gray look best on my cool skin tone and with my ..read more

The Icing

The base layer is often very plain and simple with a V or scoop neckline and slim-fitting straight-leg pants or jeans. The fit is never oversized, and the texture is never bulky, rough, or quilted. The color of both pieces is often the same. The magic happens when we add a third layer, accessories, and the other details that give that simple base layer personality. Shoes, bags, and jewelry allow for endless combinations, and scarves, belts, and hosiery complete the look to add even more polish. The details are indeed the icing to every ensemble. You’ve seen all the elements of this going out ..read more
