On a hot day last July, I sat on the Van Loon’s back deck overlooking meadows, cropland, forests and upper Lillooet River all backdropped by the steep rise of the BC Coast Ranges. The Van Loons are a fourth-generation farming family – Andrea, Marty and their daughter Erica were taking a break from the dawn-to-dusk chores to chat with me about wildlife, farming and everything in between.

Washington has the best system in the western states for keeping wolves from getting killed for eating livestock. Yet several wolf advocate groups want to impose rules that could very likely result in more dead wolves. The Center for Biological Diversity, Washington Wildlife First, Western Watersheds and several others filed a petition in August with the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission to convert the agency’s Wolf Livestock Interaction Protocol into formal regulations. This elk photo was taken 100 feet from I-5 in an ever-urbanizing Thurston County in Washington State. Conservation Northwest recently completed its pilot outreach project based near North Bend, WA. Dubbed the Wildlife Ambassador Project, this effort connects people to the information they need to recreate with respect to wildlife across public lands. Conservation Northwest’s Seasonal Wildlife-Recreation Specialist was out in the field with volunteers each weekend from July 1 to September 3 to conduct outreach at the Middle Fork trailhead and campground.
