The Third Eye is still technically on hiatus, as things in my personal life have been a bit crazy recently. But I already made a list of the best psych music of November 2023, so I figured I might as well share it. This month’s post won’t go into as much detail as I have in the past, but I’ll at least share the Spotify playlist I made and some Bandcamp links. I haven’t taken a deep dive into all of these records yet, but I’ve been enjoying playing the playlist on Shuffle to hear the psychedelic sounds of November. Some of the albums featured this month are: 1991 by Melody Fields Craterellus T ..read more

New Music: Diversions Vol. 2: Enter the Astral Plane by Kanaan

Kanaan is a fuzzed-out Norweigan psych-rock trio that’s had a hell of a 2023. They released a full-length album, Downpour, earlier this year and completed two successful European tours. Instead of taking a breather, the band released volume two of their free-flowing session/improv series on November 10th. Diversions Vol. 2: Enter the Astral Plane is a collection of improvised tracks Kanaan recorded in 2021. They say the record shows a different side of the band, aiming to explore different states of mind and musical spheres where collective improvisation is at the forefront. It doesn’t get muc ..read more

A Conversation with David Malone of Irish Psych-Rockers Space Shepherds

If you follow The Third Eye regularly, you know by now that we’re big fans of an Irish psych-rock and jam band called Space Shepherds. We’ve written reviews of three of their albums thus far, including their newest release, Washed Up On A Shore of Stars. We simply can’t get enough of the jams! Space Shepherds is a band formed out of a love for jams, and they’ve released five terrific albums of instrumental space and psychedelic rock jams since their self-titled debut in 2020. It’s the type of music that serves many forms. You can chill to it, smoke to it, and generally get lost in the spacey s ..read more

Album Review: Fledge by Grinded Grin

Last year, The Third Eye wrote a glowing review of an experimental/stoner rock album called Chapter 4 from a Croatian band called Mycena. One of Mycena’s members – Aleksandar Vrhovec – is also part of another freaky psychedelic band called Grinded Grin, which returned in October with a new album called Fledge. Grinded Grin is an experimental rock collective from Croatia that plays psychedelic stoner rock with some progressive and ethno elements. Their members change depending on the vision of each album, and through improvisation, they delve into post-rock and often through metal and free jazz ..read more

The Third Eye is Going on Hiatus

Dear readers, it’s been a fun ride. I started The Third Eye in 2022 to discover new psychedelic music, and the blog grew more than I ever expected. I thank you for that and for reading my writings. However, I will need to take a break for a while. I’ve been neglecting my professional career and other responsibilities, and it’s time to start paying more attention to them. The Third Eye has been incredibly excellent to manage over the past year or so, but I dedicate a lot of time and emotional energy to it. As something that’s always been a non-money-making hobby, the way I’ve been doing it is s ..read more

Crate Digging: Dandelion Gum by Black Moth Super Rainbow (2007)
The Third Eye Blog

Many of us know the history of early psychedelia, like in the late Sixties. So, my idea has been to start a “Crate Digging” series on Patreon to dig deeper into more recent history: weird bands like Black Moth Super Rainbow, who were active in the 2000s and 2010s but have since faded from the psychedelic scene. You can see other Crate Digging posts on The Third Eye Patreon page, but I wanted to post this and other occasional entries here on the blog. It doesn’t get much stranger than Black Moth Super Rainbow (occasionally abbreviated as BMSR) when you’re talking about weird bands. They’re a ps ..read more

Album Review: Aves Raras by San Leo

San Leo is an experimental rock duo formed in Italy in 2013 that brings us “hypnotic grooves, incendiary intensity, and minimalism.” The band describes their music as “mantra-core” and “trance-noise,” and they’ve returned their fifth studio album, Aves Raras, released on November 17th via Bronson Recordings. The Italian cosmic couriers say Aves Raras is “a resounding statement of intent, arguably their most accomplished and well-rounded effort to date.” If you like trippy, drone-out instrumental psychedelic music with plenty of krautrock influences, Aves Raras should be on your Bandcamp wishli ..read more

Soul Land Records has announced a new compilation called Love Serve Remember: Reimagined, a collection of new Ram Dass songs and musical renderings in collaboration with musicians The Human Experience, Liquid Bloom, and John Pattern. It’s set for release on December 7th. The tracks on the EP celebrate the 50th anniversary of an expansive collection of Ram Dass radio conversations, readings, and music that first took form as a six-LP box set called Love Serve Remember in 1973. For those of you who don’t know, Ram Dass (born Richard Alpert) was an American spiritual teacher, yoga guru, psycholog ..read more

Check Out Acid Folk Poet Rory McBride’s EP, Sonic Lullaby

The Third Eye hasn’t covered many musicians who embrace poetry in their music as much as Rory McBride. McBride creates psychedelic folk rock characterized by blues and spiritual music, and it’s all infused by his love and deep study of poetic language. He released a new EP, Sonic Lullaby, over the summer (June 2nd) with three short, gorgeous tracks that you can tell are influenced by the likes of Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Jim Morrison. McBride was raised in rural Illinois, and he says the “cultural desert of my childhood made me focus on artistic pursuits which served as my window to the rest ..read more

Album Review: The Royal Family
The Third Eye Blog

I’ve always thought Americans’ obsession with the British Royal Family was silly. Who gives a shit about King Charles and Prince Harry? I sure as hell don’t. But for whatever reason, many Yankees can’t help themselves by consuming tons of articles and other media about the monarchy. This brings me to an upcoming record by a different type of monarchy, a musical one called The Royal Family, a seven-piece French/English baroque psychedelic group from Toronto, Ontario. The band consists of members of Possum, ROY, Hieronymus Harry, The John Denver Airport Conspiracy (brilliant band name, there), a ..read more
