Perpetual Doom’s latest release is the new full-length album from Little Wings, the project of Californian troubadour Kyle Field, due on June 7th. The label tells us Little Wings is back with a vengeance on High On The Glade, bringing us songs of renewal and rebirth, vaudeville, and villainy.  Like all Perpetual Doom releases, it’s a record that’s an odd and sometimes darkly poetic musical excursion filled with lyrics that stand out like pages of long-lost, cult-classic novels. The album was recorded at the High Gulch Ranch in Malibu, California, the old set of Gilligan’s Island. Enginee ..read more

Polish songwriter A.J. Kaufmann is back with more psychedelic goodies after releasing a new single called “Ramzes Metamorfozis.” The trippy, astral folk song will be part of a new album Kaufmann plans to release on The Swamp Records in December 2024. Listen to “Ramzes Metamorfozis” below: Ten years after Kaufmann’s LP, Stoned Gypsy Wanderer, he started working on the new song and album. Stoned Gypsy Wanderer was released in 2014, showing A.J. as his best folk troubadour and harbinger of new sounds. Harbinger Magazine said about the album: “Nobody knows it, but A.J. Kaufmann is a national trea ..read more

Earth Day Jams: A Playlist
The Third Eye Blog

Happy Earth Day from The Third Eye! In honor of today, I created a playlist with songs inspired by nature and the environment. Some of these tracks are psychedelic, and some are not. Some are also about climate change, while others are just about the natural world. The playlist features some environmental classics, such as Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” and Neil Young’s “After The Goldrush” – two songs written during the early wave of climate activism. Some newer music and Third Eye favorites include tracks by Elkhorn, Prairiewolf, Jeffrey Alexander & The Heavy Lidders, Golde ..read more

Album Review: Atlantis by Thumos

On April 26th, Thumos will take listeners on another wonderful journey through history and philosophy, as only they can.  About Thumos and Atlantis Thumos is a Progressive Doom/Post-Metal band based in the United States. Their 2022 album, Republic, won me over, and I’ve been following and writing about them ever since. Now, they return with Atlantis, an album that the band tells me is  …  “Three songs lasting over 30 minutes, covering Plato’s dialogues Timaeus, the unfinished Critias, and the hypothetical Hermocrates.” As I mentioned above,  I’ve been a big fan of Thumos fo ..read more

New York City-based ambient country innovators SUSS are back with a new song called “Flight” that’s part of the trio’s forthcoming fifth LP, Birds & Beasts. The record will be released via Northern Spy Records on June 28th, and it sees SUSS digging deeper and populating its ethereal soundscapes with primal currents of sound inspired by the rhythms of nature. While that description offers glimmers of hope, Bob Holmes (mandolin, guitar, harmonica, violin) says, “This is not Garden of Eden kind of stuff.” Pat Irwin (electric guitar, resonator guitar, keyboards) said of the record, “I think of ..read more

Guitar duo Elkhorn released a beautiful live record in February that The Third Eye is catching up with. Shackamaxon Concert was recorded live on July 10, 2022, at 2223 Fish in Philadelphia, featuring two epic raga-like performances and released via VHF Records. Elkhorn consists of Jesse Sheppard on 12-string acoustic and Drew Gardner on electric. The duo is known for interweaving extended folk tradition with psychedelic improvisation. The duo moves freely from pre-rock to post-rock and beyond. At the Shackamaxon Concert, they’re joined by Mike Gangloff, who plays Hardanger-style fiddle.  ..read more

New Single: ‘The Dawn of Man’ by King Bastard

The New York-based psychedelic doomers King Bastard are back with a meaner and more brutally heavy track than ever. The group recently released the single “The Dawn of Man” from their forthcoming second LP, From Whence They Came, due on June 21st. King Bastard’s debut album from 2022, It Came From The Void, is one of my favorite heavier records from the past few years. It Came From The Void is a face-melting dose of heavy psychedelic doom that reminded me of the phantasmagoric delights of White Zombie’s classic Astro Creep. Based in Stony Brook, New York, King Bastard’s music is an excursion ..read more

Underrated Australian Psychedelia: A Playlist

Why is Australia such a breeding ground for new psychedelic rock? I’m not sure. If someone knows the answer, please let me know. What I do know is that the psychedelic rock revolution is well underway in Australia. Some point to Tame Impala’s arrival on the scene as creating a snowball effect that heralded the new psychedelic wave Down Under. That could be the case, but it hardly matters anymore. There are so many great psych bands in Australia that it’s hard to keep tabs on all of them. I compiled a playlist of some of the more underrated Australian psych bands. Everyone knows about Tame Impa ..read more

Album Review: Bluestone by Empty House

Empty House has returned with a new record of psychedelic wizardry called Bluestone, released on March 29th. The solo project of Blackpool-based musician Fred Laird sounds stranger than ever, with the ambient sounds on Bluestone creating an instrumental tapestry that sears deep into the night and pulsates with dark energy. Laird wrote and recorded Bluestone after a three-day trip around the Pembroke-shire coastline in November 2023. He says it’s the lunar sister to the brighter-sounding The Golden Hour, recorded during the spring/summer of 2023 but only released in February 2024. The bluestone ..read more

New Single: ‘Anger The World’ by The Janitors

The Janitors have been a formidable presence in the European rock underground since forming in 2004. The Stockholm, Sweden-based group is known for combining heavy drones with sinister garage rock freak-outs, and they’re back with a new song, “Anger The World.” The track is the first single off The Janitors’ forthcoming album, An Error Has Occurred, due May 24th. The Janitors say they are “peddlers of heavy drones and fuzzed nightmares,” they sure aren’t kidding. I hadn’t heard of them before discovering “Anger The World,” and I’m glad I did. Two decades of activity for the Swedish psych-rocke ..read more
