Photo: Mark Brennan/Flickr The United States Forest Service announced recently their intentions to completely rewrite the Land Management Plan for the Tongass National Forest. The Tongass is the largest national forest in the United States, and according to SalmonState, an Alaska-based conservation group, the Tongass “produces millions of wild salmon each year, is home to some of the densest brown bear concentrations on the planet, and it is part of the largest temperate rainforest in the world.” The new Land Management Plan will focus on updating parts of the previous plan that are outdated ..read more

Tip: Plan For The Hook Set

Photo: Domeneick Swentosky/Troutbitten In this recent story from Dom Swentosky over at Troutbitten, he shares a tip that I first heard from a Boy Scout leader in my early teens. Dom talks about the importance of planning for your hook set, especially when fishing on smaller water. On big, wide-open rivers, you don’t necessarily need to plan for the hook set as thoroughly. On water that’s overgrown, or with a low ceiling of trees, one hook set that gets away from you can easily put all your flies in a tree. You can read Dom’s tips here. Photo: Alaska Region U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service/Flickr According to Lois Parshley, of The Guardian, Alaska officials have a new plan to help save salmon in the Yukon River. Chinook salmon in the Yukon have struggled mightily for years, prompting reductions in both commercial and subsistence harvest quotas. Earlier this year, Alaskan tribes petitioned the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to reduce the accepted chinook bycatch for the pollock trawl fleet in the Bering Sea to zero fish. That petition was denied. While no decisions have been made on a federa ..read more

Targeting Wild Vs Stocked Trout

Photo: USFWS Fish and Aquatic Conservation/Flickr In a recent story over in Hatch Magazine, George Daniel discussed the differences between fishing for stocked and wild trout. He specifically uses the example of taking his students – who enroll in Penn State University’s fly fishing class – to try their hand on Spring Creek, near Bellefonte, PA. Many of these students, Daniel writes, have no problem catching stocked trout, but they struggle mightily when faced with the wild trout in Spring Creek. Stocked trout, according to Daniel, have a tendency to always look up and feed on the ..read more

Story: Lost Fishing Friends

Photo: Courtesy Domenick Swentosky I reckon, if you’ve been fishing long enough, you have a fishing buddy who you haven’t seen much of lately. In fact, you two might not even fish together anymore. That’s the case for me, and it’s the case for countless other anglers, as well. And it’s that sense of loss that Dom Swentosky builds on in his latest story over at Troutbitten, about lost fishing friends.   The post Story: Lost Fishing Friends appeared first on MidCurrent ..read more

A Lesser-Known Technique for Spring Fly Fishing
MidCurrent
by Spencer Durrant

Douglas Paton has an interesting take on a lesser-known technique he says helps catch more fish during the spring season. Spring is a time for growth and rejuvenation, and aquatic insects are no stranger to that period of change. Different bugs behave differently when emerging from their larval state into an adult, and it’s this moment of change that Paton says anglers should observe, then learn how to imitate. Paton calls these “hidden moments” and it’s an interesting take on what we try to do whenever we head to the water – imitate a natural food source in the most effective way possible. Yo ..read more
